Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

Help hospitalized veterans' primary mission is to enrich the lives of veterans and military personnel. Healing arts and crafts provide a therapeutic experience for all veterans including those who are hospitalized, in shelters, in convalescent homes and those undergoing therapy for a wide range of physical and mental challenges. Many veterans experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) and/or traumatic brain injury (tbi), which increase the risk for depression, physical injuries, substance abuse and sleep problems. The kits, provided free of charge to the veteran, become a part of the patient's treatment plan, giving them a creative outlet along with tangible therapeutic and rehabilitation benefits. They improve fine motor skills, cognitive functioning, memory improvement, anger issues, and dexterity as well as decrease the severity of ptsd/tbi triggers including anxiety, memories, sadness and frustration. We work to involve the public in meeting this mission through a broad education outreach program. Hhv's therapeutic programs provide a meaningful way for individuals, corporations, and other nonprofits to help wounded or disabled veterans; military patients and their families rebuild their lives.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

Therapeutic materials: during fy 15-16, hhv shipped 394,806 therapeutic items consisting of arts and crafts kits and computers, with a total retail value of $11,583,016. On average 32,900 individual craft kits were distributed each month. Arts and craft kits were sent to veterans and active duty military recipients in all 50 states, the district of columbia, puerto rico, american samoa and guam. Kits were also sent to veterans and military service members stationed in germany, south korea, indonesia and canada. The breakdown and value of these materials as follows: recipients: number sent: $ value: craft kits to patient home rehabilitation program 80,163 2,104,696 craft kits to hhv community arts and craft centers 168,112 5,238,347 craft kits to other programs* 84,502 2,291,814 craft kits to 198 state veterans homes 49,363 1,527,097 craft kits to 14 military medical and other military facilities 8,692 255,727 craft kits to miscellaneous other locations**3,958 150,543 computers to individual homes 16 14,792 *105 other veterans programs such as operation shoebox, volunteers of america, us vets (a transitional housing program for veterans), american legion and veterans of foreign wars posts, as well as vietnam veterans of america and disabled american veterans chapters. **miscellaneous other locations include craft kits sent to individual veterans as requested but not as part of the patient home rehabilitation program and to concert events sponsored by help hospitalized veterans. Cbc locations: currently, hhv has a presence in the following locations. Of note, we ship to veterans and facilities in all states. Hhv continues to move forward and increase veteran access to its comprehensive therapeutic arts and crafts program through storefront cbc locations, military/state-operated veterans programs, homeless shelters and other venues in select communities across the country. [key: cbc=community based center; sf=storefront hhv center; svh=state veterans home; mi=military facility; o=other ccs support] patient home rehabilitation program: because many military/ veteran patients are released to home-based or other ambulatory care and rehabilitation programs, they cannot access hhv arts and crafts in a hospital setting. Hhv's patient home rehabilitation (phr) program mails therapeutic arts and crafts kits directly to veterans at home. Approximately 17,000 patients were enrolled in the phr program at the end of this reporting period. Distribution of computers: 16 computer systems were shipped to the individual homes of eligible veterans receiving medical care in any healthcare setting as part of hhv's special projects program. The program provides eligible veterans the hardware to connect with their community using computers when their disability impacts their ability to do so. Hhv will continue to move forward and increase veteran access to its' comprehensive therapeutic arts and crafts program through storefront cbc locations, military/state-operated veterans programs, homeless shelters and other venues in select communities across the country.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Veterans assistance and awareness: mailings: to inform the general public and veterans about hhv, mailings went to thousands of individuals, informing them about the therapeutic needs of eligible veterans hhv serves. In total, 10,496,518 letters were sent to individuals who previously provided financial support to hhv. Additionally, 13,681,898 letters were mailed to other americans, educating and informing them about veterans, and active duty servicemen and women, who are hospitalized or receiving other medical care. In addition to letters, 6 news releases were written and distributed this fiscal year to help inform the public about hhv activities including concerts, other activities and veteran success stories. Commemorative partner: as a commemorative partner in the department of defense's 50th anniversary of the vietnam war commemoration, hhv has been an active participant, dedicating both concerts to vietnam veterans in the 2015-2016 "salute to valor" veterans concert series. Concerts: hhv hosted two concerts during fy 15-16 in tulsa, ok and dayton, oh. Tickets to attend were free. Printed publications and scripted announcements informed the audiences (totaling 12,600 people) about hhv's programs and services. A booth providing additional information, publications, and registration materials for hhv services was also available at both events. Other awareness initiatives: a series of 20, 30, and 60-second public service announcements (psas) were recorded by artists including: charlie daniels, sam moore, kris kristofferson and lee greenwood this fiscal year. The psas resulted in 9,211 airings reaching 21,738,774 individuals on 99 stations in 99 markets, resulting in an estimated $1,348,100 million in free advertising/airtime. Google ads: as a nonprofit organization, hhv is able to host its own google ads, focusing on awareness and support to veterans. Specific ads have appeared for web searches on related topics. Outreach to military: the organization continues to expand its craft kit distribution to active duty military personnel hospitalized in tripler army medical center and brooke army medical center and will continue to seek to assign craft care specialists to those military facilities. Hhv is now distributing craft kits to select military traumatic brain injury centers. Hiring veterans: hhv continues to increase its efforts to hire veterans whenever possible. One third of hhv's ccs's are veterans with 25% of total staff having served. Partnerships: hhv continued its partnership with soldier's wish, granting the wishes of veterans at both concerts this year. A partnership also continued with operation shoebox, which distributed hhv craft kits to deployed military service members; with the coffee bunker in tulsa, oklahoma, a gathering place for area veterans that now hosts an arts & crafts center; and the helen arts & heritage center in helen, georgia, the latter two also host a craft care specialist and holds instructional classes and workshops for local veterans. This year, hhv again joined with sons of amvets to provide arts and crafts to veterans. Hhv's partnership with the military order of the cooties continued this year in a regional partnership that encompasses five states. Additional sponsorships include hhv's support of other not-for-profit organizations including re-creation, usa, and bugles across america.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization accounts for uncertain tax positions under fasb asc 740, income taxes. Fasb asc 740 clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an enterprise's financial statements. Fasb asc 740 prescribes a comprehensive model for recognizing, measuring, presenting, and disclosing in financial statements tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return, including positions that the organization is exempt from income taxes. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization's federal return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) is subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally for three years after they are filed.
