Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Hhv's primary mission is to enrich the lives of veterans and military personnel. Hhv distributes therapeutic arts and craft kits to veterans and military; families and caregivers are included; there are a variety of venues for distribution. Hhv supports other programs deemed appropriate to support the mission. Hhv provides therapeutic arts & crafts kits to veterans and active duty patients receiving health care (at federal, state and private hospitals and nursing homes). These kits keep hands active and minds alert during recuperation after surgery or rehabilitation and let these patients know they have not been forgotten and that people care. Hhv craft kits help veterans maintain pride, self-confidence and dignity during rehabilitation, despite their disabilities and pain. We work to involve the public in meeting this mission through a broad education outreach program, hhv's therapeutic programs and provide a meaningful way for individuals, corporations, or other nonprofit organizations to help wounded or disabled veterans, military patients and their families rebuild their lives.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

Therapeutic materials: during fy 14-15, hhv shipped 525,854 therapeutic items consisting of arts and crafts kits and computers), with a total retail value of $17,753,882. On average 43,811 individual craft kits were distributed each month. Arts and craft kits were sent to veterans and active duty military recipients in all 50 states, the district of columbia, puerto rico, american samoa and guam. Kits were also sent to veterans and military service members stationed in germany, south korea, indonesia, canada, and forward deployed u.s. Navy warships. The breakdown and value of these materials as follows: recipients: number sent: $ value: craft kits to individual homes 223,570 10,072,596 craft kits to hhv community arts and craft centers 158,884 4,033,829 craft kits to other programs* 61,503 1,346,279 craft kits to 198 state veterans homes 47,386 1,293,589 craft kits to 42 military medical and other military facilities 25,160 604,286 craft kits to miscellaneous other locations* 9,229 290,653 computers to individual homes 122 112,650 *117 other veterans programs such as operation shoebox, volunteers of america, us vets (a transitional housing program for veterans), and hopes and dreams riding facility. Cbc locations: new programs were initiated during the 2014-15 fiscal year. These include one in tulsa, oklahoma and the other in helen, georgia, with a ccs provided at each. Additionally, a bi-weekly craft program is operating at the villages, florida. Hhv also began distributing arts and crafts kits to veterans in transitional housing programs operated by us vets, as well as veterans enrolled in the hopes and dreams riding facility, an equestrian therapeutic program for veterans in in quitman, georgia. Patient home rehabilitation program: because many military/veteran patients are released to home-based or other ambulatory care and rehabilitation programs, they cannot access hhv arts and crafts in a hospital setting. Hhv's patient home rehabilitation (phr) program was expanded last year mailing therapeutic arts and crafts kits directly to veterans at home. Patients enrolled in the phrp increased from approximately 16,000 to 16,624 per month during this reporting period. Hhv currently has a presence in the following locations. [key: cbc=community based center; sf=storefront hhv center; svh=state veterans home; mi=military facility; o=other ccs support] state: community: type of facility: alabama birmingham cbc, svh california barstow svh chula vista cbc, svh fresno cbc, svh los angeles cbc loma linda cbc yountville svh colorado grand junction cbc [sf], svh florida bay pines cbc [sf] gainesville cbc tampa cbc, svh the villages o georgia helen o hawaii honolulu mi idaho boise svh illinois chicago cbc hines cbc maywood cbc [sf] iowa des moines cbc, svh maryland perry point cbc minnesota minneapolis svh new mexico alburquerque cbc new york bath cbc buffalo cbc oklahoma tulsa o pennsylvania butler cbc, svh texas san antonio svh, mi temple cbc [sf] virginia richmond cbc distribution of computers: 122 computer systems were shipped to the individual homes of eligible veterans receiving medical care in any healthcare setting as part of hhv's special project program. The program provides eligible veterans the hardware to connect with their community using computers when their disability impacts their ability to do so. Hhv will continue to move forward and increase veteran access to its' comprehensive therapeutic arts and crafts program through storefront cbc locations, military/state-operated veterans programs, homeless shelters and other venues in select communities across the country.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Veteran assistance and awareness: mailings: to inform the general public and veterans about hhv, mailings went to thousands of individuals, informing them about the therapeutic needs of eligible veterans hhv serves. In total, 12,059,202 letters were sent to individuals who previously provided financial support to hhv. Additionally, 15,187,560 letters were mailed to other americans, educating and informing them about veterans, and active duty servicemen and women, who are hospitalized or receiving other medical care. In addition to letters, 16 news releases were written and distributed this fiscal year to help inform the public about hhv activities including concerts, other activities and veteran success stories. Commemorative partner: as a commemorative partner in the department of defense's 50th anniversary of the vietnam war commemoration, hhv has been an active participant, dedicating every concert to vietnam veterans in the 2014-2015 "salute to america" veterans concert series. Hhv also offered a "welcome home celebration" at the vva national convention to our nation's vietnam war veterans. Concerts: hhv hosted four concerts during fy 14-15 in in charleston, wv; prescott, az; the villages, fl; and springfield, il. Tickets to attend were free. Printed publications and scripted announcements informed the audiences (totaling 3,000 people) about hhv's programs and services. A booth providing additional information, publications, and registration materials for hhv services was also available at each event. Other awareness initiatives: a series of 20, 30, and 60-second public service announcements (psas) were recorded by artists including: aaron tippin, daryl worley, lonestar, charlie daniels, sam moore and jefferson starship this fiscal year. The psas resulted in 9,005 airings reaching 17,184,629 individuals on 85 stations in 85 markets, resulting in an estimated $1,128,260 million in free advertising/airtime. A cable tv segment was produced and aired on july 11, 2015 on fox business channel entitled, "in view," hosted by tv personality larry king and featuring hhv's arts and crafts activities and offered information to viewers on how to sign up for the phr program. This also resulted in a video located on hhv's updated web site, as well as a corporate documentary to inform multiple publics about hhv programs and services. Google ads: as a nonprofit organization, hhv is now able to host its own google ads, focusing on awareness and support to veterans. Specific ads have appeared for web searches on related topics. Outreach to military: the organization continues to expand its craft kit distribution to active duty military personnel hospitalized in walter reed army medical center, tripler army medical center, brooke army medical center, camp dodge and will continue to seek to assign craft care specialists to those military facilities. Hhv is now distributing craft kits to select military traumatic brain injury centers. Hiring veterans: hhv continues to increase its efforts to hire veterans whenever possible. One third of hhv's ccs's are veterans with 25% of total staff having served. Partnerships: hhv continued its partnership with soldier's wish, granting the wishes of veterans at all four concerts this year. A partnership also continued with operation shoebox, which distributed hhv craft kits to deployed military service members. New partnerships were formed with the coffee bunker in tulsa, oklahoma, a gathering place for area veterans that now hosts an arts & crafts center; the helen arts & heritage center in helen, georgia, which also hosts a craft care specialist and holds instructional classes and workshops for local veterans; and a part-time craft care specialist in the villages, florida, where 20 percent of the resident population are veterans. In july 2015, hhv participated in the annual convention of vietnam veterans of america in springfield, illinois, making this the third stop in hhv's 2015 veterans concert series.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

Craft care specialists: (ccs) are employees of the hhv organization who are assigned to 21 community based arts and crafts centers, two military hospitals, and 12 state veterans homes to assist staff in creative arts counseling and craft kit distribution services. There are currently 36 ccs positions, provided at no charge to the institution or the veteran patient recipients. After hhv products are distributed, the ccss work hand-in-hand with both patients and facility staff in craft kit therapy. The ccss help to recruit volunteers for their locations, with a total of 78 regularly scheduled volunteers who have given 9,575 hours of volunteer service this year.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Pension related changes other than net periodic pension cost -950,280.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization accounts for uncertain tax positions under fasb asc 740, income taxes. Fasb asc 740 clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an enterprise's financial statements. Fasb asc 740 prescribes a comprehensive model for recognizing, measuring, presenting, and disclosing in financial statements tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return, including positions that the organization is exempt from income taxes. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization's federal return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) is subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally for three years after they are filed.
