Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To open the doors of opportunity to working people and their communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
CIVIC PARTICIPATIONThe UFW Foundation engaged in conversations with the United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Labor, and the White House regarding the impact of current federal policies on farm workers. On March 26, 2012, Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, hosted the Induction of the Pioneers of the Farm Worker Movement into the Labor Hall of Honor and named the DOLs Auditorium after Cesar E. Chavez. The organization took farm workers to Washington D.C. for this special event. Additionally, the UFW Foundation coordinated a meeting in Washington D.C. with various farm worker organization leaders from throughout the country to discuss immigration reform for farm workers. Prior to the Supreme Courts decision on Arizonas anti-immigrant law SB1070, the UFW Foundation engaged community members in SB1070 protests and vigils in California and Arizona. The organization held community forums to inform individuals about the Supreme Courts decision and how it may impact them as immigrants. The UFW Foundation held 11 immigration townhalls from July through August 2012. The townhalls covered information about SB1070, DACA, and citizenship. Throughout the year, the organization engaged DACA youth and other immigrants to tell their stories through social media and to educate decision-makers about the contribution that immigrants make in the United States.
Activity 3
POLICY & RESEARCHIn 2011 and 2012, the UFW Foundation led a project involving a Consortium of ten non-profit organizations from throughout the nation to plan the infrastructure for the implementation of future farm worker immigration reform. A key part of the planning process involved developing a California Preparedness Plan that allowed the Consortium to pilot some of its recommendations to prepare to go to full implementation and greater scale. The Consortium made recommendations of replicable models and systems that can be developed and expanded to reach the largest number of farm workers as quickly as possible, once legislation is enacted. These models for farm workers can then be adapted, replicated and generally useful for the broader immigrant community impacted by other immigration reform proposals that Congress will consider in the future. In addition, the UFW Foundation made written and verbal recommendations to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals regulatory period and post-application announcement. The organization also provided valuable information to USCIS about the challenges and potential barriers that farm workers could face in trying to apply for DACA. ADVOCACY/LOBBYINGThe organization is involved in advocacy at the state and federal level to improve policies that impact farm workers and other low-income Latinos. In California, the UFW Foundation worked with other immigrant rights organizations to support the Trust Act, a bill that sets a minimum standard across the state to limit immigration hold requests in local jails. Similarly, the UFW Foundation was engaged in advocating for AB 2346, the Farm Worker Safety Act, which would allow California farm workers themselves to enforce mandatory shade and drinking water requirements by taking delinquent employers to court and holds growers, in addition to farm labor contractors, responsible for the safety of persons who work their fields. Hundreds of farm workers were trained to speak about their experiences related to heat stress. Although the bill did not pass, it helped educate the public and decision-makers about the need to protect farm workers from heat death. At the federal level, the UFW Foundation continued to be involved in advocacy to reform our immigration laws.

IRS990/Description0MEMBER SERVICESThe UFW Foundation educates immigrants about their rights and responsibilities, and helps them access the immigration benefits that may be available to them and/or their family members. In 2012, the organizations Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) accredited staff provided over 1,200 immigration legal consultations at a nominal cost for farm workers and other low-income immigrants who reside in Californias San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast and in the Phoenix metro area.In June 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) administrative relief was announced by the Obama Administration. As a result, the UFW Foundation hosted town hall meetings, informational sessions, and application workshops, to inform the community about the eligibility requirements for DACA and to assist with the application process. In addition, over 100 informational sessions on DACA were held in California, Arizona, and Oregon. Some of the cities in in which these events happened include Fresno, Bakersfield, Shafter, Wasco, Delano, Lost Hills, Arvin, Lamont, Greenfield, Salinas, Hollister, Oxnard, Santa Rosa, Phoenix, and Hermiston. Over 5,000 people attended these events. The organization also assisted hundreds of applicants with their DACA applications. The organization also provided hundreds of low-income individuals with tax preparation assistance which helped many families attain the Earned Income Tax Credit. Additionally, 2,542 community members were provided assistance with determining eligibility for safety net programs such as CalFresh (food stamps), Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, CalWORKs, unemployment and social security. As a result, part of our outreach strategy includes providing the community with educational materials about the CalFresh program and enrollment process. The UFW Foundations outreach related to these important safety net programs reached 10,174 people.
