Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To open the doors of opportunity to working people and their communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
POLICY & RESEARCHIn 2010, the UFW Foundation successfully raised $380,000, leading to the launch of a project involving a Consortium of ten non-profit organizations from throughout the nation to plan the infrastructure for the implementation of future farm worker immigration reform. Although the project will not be completed until the end of 2011, the Consortium of organizations began its efforts in 2010. A key part of the planning process involves developing a California Preparedness Plan that will allow the Consortium to pilot some of its recommendations to prepare to go to full implementation and greater scale. Outcomes of this planning process include recommendations of replicable models and systems that can be developed and expanded to reach the largest number of farm workers as quickly as possible, once legislation is enacted. These models for farm workers can then be adapted, replicated and generally useful for the broader immigrant community impacted by other immigration reform proposals that Congress will consider in the future.
Activity 3
CIVIC PARTICIPATIONAlthough the AgJOBS bill was not passed in 2010, the UFW Foundation and United Farm Workers of America were successful in jointly launching the "Take Our Jobs" Campaign which created a national discussion that went gone beyond typical farm worker or immigrant advocates, and we believe has opened up new opportunities to influence policies that affect farm workers. The campaign messaging underscored that we are a nation in denial about our food supply. It was aimed at creating a national discussion about who does the work to feed our country (a mainly undocumented workforce) and why immigration reform is needed. The campaign directly confronted the attack that undocumented immigrants take "American" jobs, by challenging Congressmembers to help their unemployed U.S. citizen and legal resident constituents fill jobs that often go to undocumented farm workers. Those decision makers were also asked to try farm work for a day to experience what farm work is like. In addition, a broader call was made to unemployed individuals who are authorized to work in the United States, to apply to farm jobs. This campaign generated an unprecedented amount of media coverage. During the summer of 2010, the UFW Foundation and the UFW did interviews with more than 160 media outlets, not including 40+ media outlets on the kickoff day, June 24th. The first AP story from the June 24th announcement ran in over 300 outlets. An AP story covering the campaign on the "Colbert Report" ran in over 200 outlets. National news has included the Wall Street Journal, TV Guide, Yahoo news, Google news, NPR (6 different stories), Univision, , Telemundo, CNN, CNN Anderson Cooper 360, CNNMoney, ABC Diane Sawyer, CBS Brian Wilson, MSNBC, Fox national TV, Fox Radio News, and The Economist magazine. Approximately 10 reporters tried to work a day in the fields and ran stories about their experience. 99% of the coverage has been positive. In addition, the Take Our Jobs website generated over 5 million hits over the summer. On September 24, 2010, during the special Congressional hearing on "Take Our Jobs," where Arturo Rodriguez, President of the United Farm Workers, and Stephen Colbert provided testimony, Republican Immigration Sub-committee Members said that if farm worker jobs were better paid, then more legal residents would do the work and agreed that farm workers have poor working conditions. This was an opportunity to create a narrative and communications strategy that holds both parties accountable to improve the health of farm worker families. The UFW Foundation led a group of farm workers who traveled from California to DC to attend the hearing and conduct Congressional visits regarding the need for immigration reform for farm workers. In addition to the Take Our Jobs Campaign, the UFW Foundation launched a citizenship program in Kern and Monterey Counties in December 2010, targeting non-English speaking farm workers and other low-income immigrants. Many individuals who received legal status through the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) who are at least 50 years old, are now able to take the citizenship test in their native language starting December 1, 2010. This is an opportunity to encourage people to apply who have seen the English test as a barrier. Public Service Announcements (PSA) were produced and broadcast on Radio Campesina to announce the opportunity and encourage participation.

IRS990/Description0MEMBER SERVICESIn 2010, the UFW Foundation opened a new office in Greenfield, Monterey County and hired the Arizona State Coordinator to begin a program in Maricopa County, Arizona in early 2011. Furthermore, 620 people became members of the UFW Foundation in California, primarily in Kern and Monterey County. Membership benefits included access to the UFW Foundation's services, $4000 in accidental death insurance, prescription drug and other types of discounts. The UFW Foundation provided close to 200 immigration legal services consultations at a nominal cost for farm workers and other low-income immigrants. The organization's immigration legal assistance includes direct service in one-on-one settings for matters such as; citizenship, green card and work permit renewal, green card applications, and family visa petitions. The organization also provided 374 low-income individuals with tax preparation assistance which helped many families attain the Earned Income Tax Credit. Other services offered to the community included assistance with wage claims, workplace discrimination and sexual harassment, application assistance for unemployment and social security, document translation and referrals to social and health services. Additionally, 630 community members were provided assistance with determining eligibility and applying for safety net programs such as CalFresh, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and CalWORKs. The UFWF conducted educational presentations about the programs and the application process to ensure an understanding of the requirements, their responsibilities and the documentation they will need to demonstrate eligibility when submitting an application. In addition, the organization trained community organizations around immigration rules that impact immigrant communities seeking public benefits. The UFW Foundation also conducted presentations and outreach at 142 community events to inform thousands of constituents about health-related issues, such as heat stress prevention, and workplace rights; particularly with respect to rest breaks, access to water and shade. The organization also provided outreach on domestic violence education and prevention and the legal remedies available to victims regardless of immigration status. These events included 49 presentations that the UFW Foundation conducted for 968 attendees throughout Monterey and Kern County at various Migrant Education Centers, schools, and other community based organizations.
