Major Activities

Activity 2
Animal protection service program investigates animal cruelty cases throughout california, and prosecutes individuals and organizations who neglect or abuse animals. This year aps staff fielded 2,539 calls which resulted in 768 formal complaints. 500 compliants required a field response and approximately half of the field calls required at least one follow up visit. Officers checked on the health and welfare of over 11,200 animals, resulting in the seizure of 12 animals. Cases filed resulted in 4 convictions, 2 warrants of arrest, and 2 city attorney office hearings.the disaster animal response team (dart), a blend of staff and volunteers, rescues and provides temporary shelter and front-line veterinary care for animals during emergencies both local and national. No major disasters occurred in fy2013 that required a response from dart. Dart participated in 5 trainings to keep them at the ready, as well as career fairs and disaster fairs.the animal safety net program provides an undisclosed safe haven for pets of battered individuals who fear leaving their pets behind where they are vulnerable to harm by a violent partner. This year the program helped 30 families, housing 22 dogs and 26 cats in loving homes while their human families received much needed emotional support from domestic violence shelters and professional counselors.
Activity 3
The internationally acclaimed teaching love and compassion (tlc) program is designed to instill empathy into at-risk youth while simultaneously providing anger management skills and conflict resolution tools to use in lieu of violence. This program uses shelter dogs as the medium for these effects. Fifty seven dogs and 79 students participated in one of 9 programs held this year. Jtlc, a shorter version of tlc, is a court mandated program that is offered to qualified convicted juvenile offenders who participated in animal abuse or some kind of violent behavior. Working with the office of the district attorney, the judiciary, the defense bar, and the probation department; this program held 4 sessions in fiscal 2013.360 campers (ages 8-13) and 39 counselors-in-training (ages 14-17) participated in friends for life summer and spring camps learning respect and compassion for all living things. Camp activities include hands-on dog training-an activity that makes shelter dogs more adoptable-as well as puppy and kitten handling. Humane educators attended a variety of workshops this year. 196 on-line presentations were downloaded by teachers to use in their classrooms from various parts of the united states and countries such as chile, spain, and venezula. The girls scout animal care merit badge workshop was attended by 254 students.
