Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 900, Part XII, Line 2B

The Organization's Finance Committee oversees the independent audit. This process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

During the year ended December 31, 2013, the full amount of the permanently restricted funds were released by the donor to be applied to the services provided to indigent widows with cancer which was the original restriction of the grant. As a result there were no permanently restricted net assets at December 31, 2014 and 2013.

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization evaluates its uncertain tax positions and will recognize a loss contingency when it is probable that a liability has been incurred as of the date of the financial statements and the amount of the loss can be reasonably estimated. The amount recognized is subject to estimate and management judgment with respect to the likely outcome of each uncertain tax position. The amount that is ultimately sustained for an individual uncertain tax position or for all uncertain tax positions in the aggregate could differ from the amount recognized. As of December 31, 2014 management did not identify any uncertain tax positions.

IRS990/Desc0CLIENT SERVICESIn 2014, over 400 certified practitioners provided treatments to CMCC clients. Evidence-based complementary integrative medicine (CIM) is the cornerstone of our mission. CIM addresses the most common complications that result in interruption or termination of cancer treatments. Acupuncture and herbs relieve cancer-related pain, nausea and debilitating neuropathy. Massage/ bodywork addresses pain by increasing circulation, reducing swelling and preventing the formation of excess scar tissue. Topical herbs and ointments provide relief from radiation burns. Tinctures provide symptom relief at end of life.We provide treatment to 800 women every year. We are able to offer almost 19,000 hours of treatment. Multiple sessions are scheduled depending on the staging and severity of the disease. In 2014 we received a grant to begin our program of Community Acupuncture. Offered in each clinic, the groups allow 8 people to receive treatment at one time, greatly increasing our ability to offer treatment. While the clinic is open three days a week for treatment, the In-Home Comfort Care Team provides CIM as needed in the homes of clients with end-stage cancer. CIM treatments are a critical intervention for terminal cancers as they ease the pain, fatigue, wasting, and shortness of breath common near the end of life. In addition, the contact with the home care team ensures that the last weeks and months of life are not spent in isolation and fear. Each cancer patient is provided with a survivorship care plan that introduces the role of nutrition, exercise, social support, and stress reduction in extending quality of life and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. The breadth of client services includes the weekly Clinic Food Pantry. By working with farmer's markets, CSA's and Whole Foods, CMCC is able to provide free organic produce every clinic day. In addition, clients may attend our free six-week interactive classes that teach healthy shopping, cooking, and eating on a budget. These classes are offered in English, Spanish, and Cantonese. Over 14 body work treatments are available for clients. Treatments range from Swedish massage to the ancient art of Qiquong. In 2014 we began a partnership with Sunflower Wellness. Sunflower Wellness practitioners are cancer exercise specialists certified by the American College of Sports Medicine. Cancer certified instructors from the Healing Yoga Foundation provide free weekly restorative yoga classes for our clients to help them manage pain, fatigue, and stress. Our cultural and linguistic competency has dramatically increased the rate at which underserved, monolingual women are referred to us for integrative cancer care and supportive services, including advocacy and navigation to sustain access to the recommended continuum of cancer care.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SOCIAL SERVICESAnother factor in our ability to work effectively with low-income women is that we understand and support the significant social service needs of clients. We like to say "we are the safety net". Demands of housing, finances, food, transportation and familial support often push cancer treatment from the forefront. For this reason, CMCC has a vigorous, proactive on-site program of social services to provide practical, emotional, and financial support to address the crises most likely to interfere with cancer care and recovery. CMCC provides emergency funds to help with unpaid rent, utilities, and food shortages, the most common reason low-income women are forced to delay or abandon potentially life-saving treatments. Grocery cards supplement their often scant food supply and provide access to basic foods required for their families. Because most of our clients are contending with advanced cancers, keeping them on course with chemotherapy or other cancer treatments is essential to their survival chances. We seek out and foster strong relationships with our partner organizations.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0VOLUNTEER SERVICESThe Volunteer Services program continues to be the most critical factor in our ability to provide comprehensive treatment and services year after year. Their consistent efforts at recruitment, recognition, and retention is fundamental to our ability to hold 400 and continually educate volunteers who are highly skilled, compassionate providers. In 2014, the estimated value of their time and expertise is estimated at approximately $1,059,000. In June, September and November of 2014, the Volunteer Services department held updated and much improved training sessions, graduating over 41 new volunteers. This included 14 acupuncturists, numerous body workers, support staff, drivers and interpreters. The weekend event includes lengthy training on clinic operations, client needs and cultural humility. Note that we do not allow any practitioners to provide treatment in the clinic until a volunteer training is complete. A volunteer from the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy program donates his expertise to help our clients understand and apply for health insurance and public benefits. He also works with them to create wills, power of attorney, custody agreements and other legal documents they may need.In 2014 CMCCC conducted two lymphedema workshops that included a combination of information and exercise breaks that were focused on self-help tools for lymphedema. One class offered Spanish interpretation and the other Cantonese and Mandarin. Volunteer Services also offered two Biology of Cancer workshops for our volunteers (June & September). The goal of this class is to assist CMCC volunteers to become more effective integrative practitioners by building on the Medical Overview of Cancer presented in their original Volunteer Training. It presents more detailed information on the science of cancer origins, progression, diagnosis, and conventional treatment. In August 2014, CMCC held an in-service for our volunteer practitioners led by Misha Cohen, OMD, LAc. Ms. Cohen is an internationally- known Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist and educator. Her course was designed to help our practitioners better understand the theory behind using acupuncture, herbs, supplements, and other aspects of Chinese medicine in conjunction with a client's western cancer treatment and to increase their skills in the development of treatment plans for clients undergoing western cancer treatment. On November 6, 2014 CMCC provided an in-service for San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) Patient Navigators. The presentation introduced general concepts of complementary medicine in the context of cancer and emphasized the ways in which we integrate the care we provide with the care their patients receive at SFGH. The presentation was evaluated positively and the questions from navigators showed significant insight and acceptance of the value of complementary integrative medicine for their low-income patients.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0During the year ended December 31, 2013, the full amount of the permanently restricted funds were released by the donor to be applied to the services provided to indigent widows with cancer which was the original restriction of the grant. As a result there were no permanently restricted net assets at December 31, 2014 and 2013.
IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The Organization evaluates its uncertain tax positions and will recognize a loss contingency when it is probable that a liability has been incurred as of the date of the financial statements and the amount of the loss can be reasonably estimated.
