Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The audit committee and executive director review the prepared preliminary draft of the form 990. After their review and approval, a final draft is circulated to the full board of directors and a comment period of at least one-week is allowed for questions or comments before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members complete conflict of interest policy statements annually. The executive director and the board chair(s) track any potential conflicts. When potential conflicts are identified, they are disclosed to the full board of directors and the potentially conflicted director is excused from all related conversations.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Independent members of the board, without the executive director's participation, do a compensation review as part of the e d's yearly performance evaluation. They examine published data on non-profit salaries to determine comparable compensation levels. The results of the review are then discussed with the e d and a final compensation recommendation is approved by the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Race forward's form 990 and yearly audited financial statements are available upon request. Requests for all other documents are made on a case-by-case basis.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICE:

2018 programmatic achievements race forward's and center for social inclusion's programmatic activities flow through four departments and three cross-organizational initiatives to bring the vision of a racially just world to reality. Narrative, arts, and culture department race forward has long supported the racial justice field, developing and sharing tools to build enduring race-explicit narratives that advance racial justice. To win our freedom, we need to tell our stories, define our narratives, and strategically build, advance, and defend a more equitable and just culture. Race forward's narrative, arts, and culture department works strategically in and through journalism, communications, the arts, popular culture, and cultural organizing to build and secure a culture that centers equity and justice for all. It has developed cutting-edge curriculum in narrative strategy and has used it to train hundreds of organizers, artists, funders, government leaders, and communications experts. Select 2018 highlights: extended our capabilities by hiring a director of communications, a vice president of narrative arts & culture, and an audience engagement manager. Reached 300,000 colorlines readers monthly. Colorlines is an award-winning daily news site that reports on the systemic racism at the core of our nation's challenges, connecting to current events and highlighting the stories of people directly affected by structural racism. Completed the second round of the arts innovation lab through our narrative and culture strategies work. The arts lab is a racial equity training cohort constructed for the performing arts community in new york city. Race forward provided peer and expert coaching and technical assistance to all participants. Movement and capacity building department the movement and capacity building (mcb) department builds leadership and capacity within the racial justice movement for grassroots organizations and other institutions to advance racial equity on a national scale. The most critical components of this work center upon communities of color. Our policy work (particularly but not exclusively related to energy, food, housing, transportation, and infrastructure) has recently shifted to operate alongside this department, under the leadership of our new vice president of movement and capacity building, in recognition of the importance of our issue-based work in supporting grassroots leadership development. Select 2018 highlights: played a leadership role in national and regional convenings on climate change and energy democracy. Race forward is the lead national organization coordinating 100% cities, an advocacy program for greater racial equity in how renewable energy systems are implemented. Completed 60 client trainings and 16 open to the public trainings. Produced a robust fred talk at facing race, which developed into a series of videos featuring detroit local organizers, previous fred talk presenters and a political education session designed for audience members. Institutional and sectoral change department race forward's institutional and sectoral change work seeks to establish racial equity practice in an entire field (rather than organization by organization) on a long-term basis. The work includes facilitating learning cohorts in these sectors, developing tools for long-term change, and tracking the shifts that demonstrate their replication. Select 2018 highlights: reached over 100 members in our government alliance on race & equity network. It also expanded with a focus on the south. Gare also held a national meeting in chicago that gathered representatives from 75 jurisdictions, or over 500 attendees. Launched racial equity here, a national campaign based on local community-level engagements that take concerted action to dismantle structural racism city by city. More than 600 organizations across the country have made commitments. Launched the philanthropic change initiative, a program that supports fou
