“Portland open studios creates a unique educational opportunity for the public to witness the process of art in the making. During our 2013-2014 fiscal year, 96 artists opened thier studios' to the community. More than 5,000 tickets were distributed, allowing as many as 10,000 adults and thier children to explore artists' studios and learn about the media, materials, and business of the creative endeavor. In addition, portland open studios accomplished the following of public benefit during its 2013-2014 year: portland open studios continued its educational internship program, designed to connect high school students with working artist mentors. In 2013 the educational internship program expanded to allow college students to apply. Through this program more than 30 high school students ad several college students were paired with artists during the portland open studios' 2013 tour. In the course of the internships students recieved portfolio reviews, personalized art lessons (in some cases with tools and materials tha the students would not have otherwise had access to), and learned about the structure of an artist's studio, and what it takes to develop a career in the arts. Portland open studios continues to offer the kimberly gales scholarship to emerging artists. This scholarship is available to applicants between the ages of twenty and thirty, waives the tour's participation fee, and pays a 100 stipend. Recipients' work is highlighted in the tour guide, providing exposure for young artists who might not otherwise be able to participate. The recipient in 2013 was renee hartig an additional award was granted this year to honor a member who had gone above and beyond in service to the organization. The winner of the 2013 artist member service award was shawn demarest. For the 2013 tour, portland open studios continued to offer visitors the option of purchasing an iphone app version of the trou guide, and also released an android app for the first time. New for the 2013 tour portland open studios offered high schools and colleges the opportunity to receive free copies of our map-only ticket. In this first year of the maps to schools program portland open studios gave away over 1000 maps.”
