“Portland open studios creates a unique educational opportunity for the public to witness the process of art in the making. During our 2015-2016 fiscal year, 106 artists opened their studios to the community. More than 3,000 tickets were distributed, allowing as many as 6,000 adults and their children to explore artists' studios and learn about the media, materials, and business of the creative endeavor. In addition, portland open studios accomplished the following of public benefit during its 2015-2016 year: portland open studios continued its educational internship program, designed to connect high school and college students with working artist mentors. Through this program more than 30 high school and college students were paired with artists during the portland open studios 2015 tour. In the course of the internships students received portfolio reviews, personalized art lessons (in some cases with materials that students would not have otherwise had access), and learned about the structure of an artist's studio, and what it takes to develop a career in the arts. Portland open studios continues to offer the kimberly gales scholarship to emerging artists. This scholarship is available to applicants between the ages of twenty and thirty, waives the tour's participation fee, and pays a 100 stipend in order to eliminate the financial barrier which might prevent young artists from participating. Additionally the recipients' work is highlighted in the tour guide and in press releases, providing increased exposure for the artist. The recipient in 2015 was sarah fagan. An additional award was granted this year to honor a member whose artwork was recognized as excellent in quality and for contributing to the diverse media and styles of the tour. The winner of the 2015 merit award was carole murphy. New for the 2015 tour portland open studios shifted its maps to school program to an apps to schools program offering free copies of the tour guide in mobile app form to teachers and students at every public high school in clackamas county, multnomah county, and washington county, as well as colleges in those counties that offered a art degree program. The shift in format allowed distribution to take place more easily. Free copies of the printed tour guide were still made available to students and teachers by request.”
