Mission

The mission of open school is to develop connection, capability, and confidence in disconnected youth through relationship-based, quality learning experiences that result in academic, personal, and community success.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Step up: provides intensive advocacy, mentoring, leadership development, tutoring and summer program services for academic-priority students enrolled at roosevelt high school, marshall high school, madison high school, and gresham high school. This program is funded by a combination of grants from portland public schools, the portland children's levy, private foundations, gresham-barlow school district,and individual gifts. The step up program expanded this year to include a partnership to serve incoming freshman in the gresham-barlow school district. The step up program was awarded one of three national summer learning association planning grants to explore application of program practices beyond the organization's direct operations.these programs served over 455 students.
Activity 3
Career services: career services programs include the following:transitions: a program funded through the portland development commission, worksystems inc. And private donors. This program is aimed at helping high school seniors gain the skills they need to be successful in achieving their goals beyond high school. Students go through job readiness training, college searches, financial aid workshops, and college tours. They must also successfully complete either a college class or an internship in a career field of interest.career foundations and connections: a partnership between the organization and local businesses, funded by the portland development commission, worksystems inc., and private donors. The program targets income-qualified high school graduates in the city of portland, providing academic preparation, job readiness training, internship experience, post-secondary assistance for continuing education, the opportunity for full-time employment, and follow up services.college success: this partnership with the portland development commission, the national youth employment coalition, and worksystems inc. Is designed to give youth entering their first year of college a peer-support framework and dedicated logistical, monetary, and personal support from the organization and staff. The goal is to ensure that all college success students successfully complete their first year of college and learn how to navigate college systems.the career services program, in partnership with local business partners was recognized as a national model for connecting its participants to post-secondary success. The workforce strategy center released a november 2009 study of 14 model programs accross the united states, recognizing open meadow's career services placement rates and participant wage-earning gains.this program served over 236 participants.

WE PROVIDE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL PREPARATION LEADING TO A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, COMPLETION OF MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND ATTAINMENT OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. STUDENTS MAY ACCESS PROJECT-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOCUSED ON NATURAL RESOURCE, AND HUMAN SERVICES. STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED TRANSITION TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR POST-SECONDARY PLANNING AND PREPARATION LEADING TO COLLEGE, INTERNSHIP, AND TRAINING IN CAREER FOCUS AREAS.UPON ENTRY OPEN MEADOW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AVERAGE A FIFTH-GRADE MATH AND READING LEVEL. MOST STUDENTS ARE THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILIES TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. 95% OF OPEN MEADOW'S 2010 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING CLASS PASSED A COLLEGE CLASS AS PART OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. 80% OF OPEN MEADOW MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPLETING THE 8TH GRADE HAVE MET STATE BENCHMARKS IN THREE SUBJECT AREAS - A PERCIENTAGE WELL ABOVE THE AVERAGE FOR NINTH GRADERS.THESE PROGRAMS SERVED OVER 260 STUDENTS.
