DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Global Source Education delivers its mission currently operating under the trade name of Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance, with the purpose of preserving and enhancing the heritage of historic Suyematsu Farm as a community asset involving a center of active farming, interpretation, and education, and upholding the living legacy of master farmer Akio Suyematsu. Founded by the Suyematsu Family in 1928, these original forty acres on Bainbridge Island, Washington is one of the oldest, continuously farmed working landscapes in the Central Puget Sound Region. Today, it is the last remaining original Bainbridge Island farms, and the largest production farm in Kitsap County. Partly owned by the City of Bainbridge Island, this working landscape and historic property represents a unique private-public partnership. Akio Suyematsu was the last of the earliest Japanese American farmers who, over the entire arc of his nine decades of life farming this land, helped to make Bainbridge Island known for growing some of the finest tasting strawberries. After his passing at age 90 in 2012, the City of Bainbridge issued a proclamation establishing August 19 as Akio Suyematsu Day. In 2016, five acres of the original family homestead, now referred to as the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property, was listed in the Bainbridge Island Register of Historic Places by the City of Bainbridge Island as the first ever historic preservation district. Today, Suyematsu Farm is the hub of Bainbridge Island's farming community and a treasured and iconic cultural asset. Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance is committed to honoring the legacy of the historic Suyematsu Farm for generations to come guided by Akio Suyematsu's principles and traditions of clean living, with the support of the next generation of master farmers who learned from Akio and continue to farm this land. Since 2007, this historic, ninety-seven-year-old farm has been the home base of Global Source Education's core program activities, through our edible education initiative, (dba) Educulture, and heritage education initiative, (dba) The Only What We Can Carry Project. In late 2022, EduCulture organized and facilitated a two-part symposium on the past, present and future of historic Suyematsu Farm. This program served key, local stakeholder groups, whose work has helped carry on the legacy of Akio Suyematsu, as a citizen and farmer. They came together over collective concern regarding a proposal to re-develop the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property, rather than restore and preserve the original homestead as intended by City and community mandate. Many of the historic structures on the property had entered an endangered state over past decade due to deferred maintenance. Following this symposium, six of these local stakeholder groups, including EduCulture, aligned around saving, repairing, and revitalizing this endangered community asset, and formalized under the dba/trade name Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance. EduCulture/Global Source Education served as fiscal sponsor. During 2023-2024, the Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance advocated for new management and oversight to the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property, and established a set of primary goals, that included: stabilizing and restoring the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property; placing the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property on Washington State and National Historic Registers; and improving the success of the current master farmers on Suyemastsu Farm, who are Akio Suyematsu's agricultural legacy. SFLA began a fundraising campaign to help realize these goals and was honored to be selected as a featured non-profit in the 2024-25 One Call for All Campaign held each year on Bainbridge Island. In September 2023, the City of Bainbridge Island elected to remove its, then, property manager from the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property. Soon after, the City of Bainbridge Island invited Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance to prepare a proposal to oversee and manage this community asset. SFLA's proposal was submitted and accepted in December. At the end of 2023, Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance entered into an agreement to formally merge with Global Source Education, to dedicate our collective missions, assets, skill sets and programs to more sharply focus the non-profit organization on preserving Suyematsu Farm as a heritage site and community asset, carrying forward the living legacy of Akio Suyematsu, and cultivating a center of active farming, interpretation and education. Over the course of this fiscal year, our non-profit organization restructured our leadership and administration from having a paid managing director and staff to becoming an all-volunteer operation led by a qualified Board of Directors, elected during this transitional period. In January 2024, Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance began the process of developing an agreement with the City of Bainbridge Island to become operator and manager of the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property. From January through the end of the fiscal year, SFLA facilitated a process of due diligence, conducting series of inspections, site visits and consultations with contractors, historic preservationists and architects, to gauge and evaluate the state of the historic structures on the property and come up with a working plan and budget to accomplish this work that would become part of agreement to operate and manage this public land and historic site. On August 19, SFLA organized and hosted a gathering on Suyematsu Farm to celebrate Akio Suyematsu Day that featured members of the Suyematsu Family, farmers mentored by Akio Suyematsu, members of the Japanese American and Indipino communities, along with city and state government officials. City Council members read aloud the City of Bainbridge Island proclamation to help remember and honor Akio Suyematsu. By the end of our 2023-24 fiscal year, the Suyematsu Farm Legacy Alliance was still negotiating an agreement with the City of Bainbridge Island to operate and manage the Suyematsu Farm Historic Property, which we are aiming to be finalized during the first quarter of our 2024-25 fiscal year. Once this agreement is in place, SFLA will initiate the urgent repairs, stabilization of the Suyematsu family farmhouse to bring it back a state of occupancy and restoration to its historic period of significance. Then begins the larger restoration, interpretation and educational preparation for Suyematsu Farm's Centennial Celebration in 2028.$0$13,082
