Global Source Education is a non-profit, professional learning organization that has been serving elementary and secondary education in the Pacific Northwest and beyond since 1999. Our educational projects build bridges between classrooms and communities around crucial topics and issues facing humanity and the planet for the purpose of cultivating scholarship, stewardship, citizenship and sustainability. Global Source Education currently delivers educational programming through two major initiatives: EduCulture, an Edible Education project, and the Only What We Can Carry Project. During our 2017-2018 programming season, we directly served an audience of close to 2000 students, educators and community members from throughout the Puget Sound region of Washington State. What follows are the major accomplishments of each initiative. EduCulture, An Edible Education Project: EduCulture creates locally grown edible education programs which bridge schools and communities around the study of food and food systems in order to foster deeper scholarship, stewardship, citizenship, and sustainability. We are connecting place and taste with where we live, eat and learn. EduCulture partners with schools, farms, and other community assets to transform working landscapes into outdoor classrooms. The larger aim being to deliver authentic, lived educational experiences that inform a more lived school curriculum. This idea about community serving as curriculum is something that the grandfather of American public education, John Dewey, advocated for over a century ago, that the "school itself shall be made a genuine form of active community life, instead of a place set apart in which to learn lessons" (School and Society, 1900). EduCulture has been pioneering and leading edible education programming since 2006. These efforts made locally grown history on Bainbridge Island, WA with our farm-school partnerships seeding both public and private farmland in service to local education and growing public produce for the school and community food stream. What began in 2007 with a handful of teachers and farmers, blossomed into demonstration projects that have over the years grown to become dedicated school programming with a partner school district and university. Our edible education programs meet academic learning goals, while teaching students of all ages about where their food comes from and how their food systems work. In the process of serving Pre-K, K-12 and Higher Education, we are helping to preserve and strengthen local and regional food communities and economies, while helping to conserve place and taste for this and future generations. EduCulture has been partnering with the Bainbridge Island School District since 2007, and serving as their formal Edible Education Liaison since 2014. Working across all grades, curriculum and schools, we oversee and help deliver edible education programming across instructional farm plots, school gardens, school kitchens, food waste recycling, and an array of community food assets, including production farms, food processing facilities, grocery stores, and restaurants. EduCulture has developed elementary Life Science Curriculum and teacher Professional Development. We've created and tested original NGSS and STEAM aligned Place-Based and Environmental Science curriculum, Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies thematic lessons, as well as connecting to Social and Emotional Learning, Diversity and Multicultural Education, and CTE. These units of study, grounded in state and district health and wellness policies, have been formed into developmentally appropriate, scope-and-sequenced, edible education pathways grades K-4. We also have developed and tailored professional development in garden education best practices for elementary teaching staff. This is the 7th school year of the "Bite of Bainbridge" program in Bainbridge Island School District lunch, serving with fresh produce from Bainbridge Island Farms, including local raspberries from historic Suyematsu Farm, whose family are alumni of the District. Since 2015, EduCulture, in partnership with the Master of Arts in Education Program at Antioch University Seattle, has produced and facilitated the Leadership in Edible Education Certificate Program and Concentration (LEE). This groundbreaking teacher training and leadership program has been working with formal and informal educators, graduate students and other professionals, who seek to make a difference through edible education at the pre-K, elementary, secondary, post-secondary levels and the wider food community. Taking place over four quarterly courses, this year long, intensive professional education program is aimed at cultivating the experience, knowledge, and repertoire for those who aspire to have a formal practice in the field of edible education. During the first two quarters of the program, LEE students examine paths of practice in this region's food and school communities. Through the second half of the LEE program, students examine, ground and hone their own professional path in edible education, from theory to practice. The manifestation of which is a culminating project and field experience aimed at demonstrating one's potential for leadership in this field. The LEE Program is the first formal university concentration in edible education of its kind in the Unites States. Situated throughout the Central Puget Sound Region, LEE utilizes local schools and food communities as our curriculum. We have graduated three LEE cohorts since the program began. Our current cohort began their program cycle in July 2018, and will graduate as leaders in edible education in June 2019. EduCulture received commissions to consult and lead trainings for other school districts and their farm partners in support and development of their edible education curriculum and school-community program partnerships. EduCulture also serves as education representative to the Puget Sound Regional Food Policy Council and community advisor to the Washington State University Food Systems Team. The Only What We Can Carry Project: The Only What We Can Carry Project (OWWCC) uses the study of WWII, Japanese American Internment, and its impact on Bainbridge Island, to foster learning experiences about exclusion, inclusion and citizenship for schools and community. March 30, 2018 marked the 76th anniversary of the day the Bainbridge Island Japanese American community was forced by US Government Executive Order 9066 to leave their homes, farms, livelihoods, for an exclusion that would last through WWII. Bainbridge Island has a wealth of living resources that illuminate a tumultuous era and enduring story that offers a lens into history beyond textbooks. OWWCC is an educational and community development project founded to provide educators, students and citizens lived experiences that can inform a more lived curriculum, lived community and lived democracy. OWWCC partners with a consortium of local organizations to make the Bainbridge Island a living interpretive center for the study of the Japanese American experience of inclusion and exclusion, as it relates to the larger American experience in the 20th and 21st centuries. OWWCC collaborates with the Bainbridge Island Historic Preservation Commission, City of Bainbridge Island, Bainbridge Island History Museum and others to help preserve historic farms on Bainbridge Island. This primary work being at Historic Suyematsu & Bentryn Family Farms, one of the oldest and largest production farms in the region, where OWWCC and EduCulture collectively serve as resident educators. OWWCC is helping to keep Bainbridge Island heritage alive through educational programming that brings together local students, educators and community elders for intergenerational activities, and historic programming that keep alive over a century of original community and a continuum of agricultural heritage into the 21st century. OWWCC has been working with teachers and students throughout the Puget Sound Region to enrich, enhance, and enliven their curriculum with this history and stories, especially on Bainbridge Island. In 2017-2018, OWWCC was commissioned by the Bainbridge Island School District to organize and support a special program to enhance and enrich the 11th American Studies unit on Japanese American Exclusion during WWII. The curricular purpose was to examine how US Foreign Policy during the WWII era impacted life for Bainbridge Islanders at that time, localizing their study of US Foreign Policy through the Bainbridge Island experience with WWII and Japanese American exclusion. OWWCC developed and facilitated a series of teacher trainings, digital presentations, curricular resources, and panel discussions with Bainbridge Island survivors and BISD alumni and 11th grade students.$0$55,159
