| Global Source Education is a non-profit, professional learning organization that has been serving elementary and secondary education in the Pacific Northwest and beyond since 1999. Our projects bridge classrooms and communities around crucial topics and issues facing humanity and the planet for the purpose of cultivating scholarship, stewardship, citizenship and sustainability. Global Source Education delivers our programs through our two major educational initiatives: EduCulture's Edible Education Project and our Only What We Can Carry Project. During our 2016-2017 programming season, we directly served more than 2000 students, youth and educators, adults from Bainbridge Island and wider Puget Sound region. Major accomplishments of EduCulture's Edible Education Project: EduCulture creates locally grown edible education programs which bridge local farms, classrooms, lunchrooms and communities in order to foster scholarship, stewardship, citizenship, and sustainability. EduCulture is partnering with schools and farms, transforming working landscapes into landscapes of learning, presenting lived experiences that inform a more lived culture of curriculum and utilizing our community as curriculum. EduCulture has been a pioneer and leader in edible education in the Puget Sound region. We have made locally grown history on Bainbridge Island with our farm-school partnerships seeding both public and private farmland in service to local education and growing public produce for the school and community food stream. What began in 2007 with a handful of teachers and farmers, has blossomed into full farm-school programs and a comprehensive and collaborative vision embraced by the students, teachers, District leadership, School Board, local farmers, families, and the wider community. Our edible education programs are serving academic needs, while growing produce for school and community food streams. In the process of inspiring young people to become co-producers in their food communities, we are preserving the tradition of local sustainable agriculture and conserving a taste of for this and future generations. On these landscapes of learning, students from local K-12 schools practice math, science and social studies skills, while they learn about our Island's rich and unique heritage and study our food community, from production and processing to consumption and recycling. Relationships with our partner farmers continue taking deeper root. We are working in greater collaboration to develop plant and animal pathways for students that mirror our local food community. Following locally raised crops (heritage strawberries, sugar pumpkins, heirloom potatoes) from master farm to instructional farm to school garden to school classroom to school kitchen allows for greater educational parity between community and school food chains. 2016-2017 Edible Education Highlights included: Edible Education Liaison to Bainbridge Island School District, working with all schools, grades K-12, covering programs across curriculum utilizing instructional farms, school gardens, school kitchens, and food waste recycling. Combining the skills and insights of farmers and teachers, Educulture has developed elementary Life Science Curriculum and teacher Professional Development. We created and tested original NGSS and STEAM aligned Place-Based and Environmental Science curriculum that also integrates grade level Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies themes, as well as Social and Emotional Learning, Multiculturalism, and CTE. These units of study, grounded in state and district Health and Wellness policies, are developmentally appropriate scope-and-sequenced and scaffolded for K-4. We have created lessons and supporting materials for the farm, school gardens, and the classroom. We also have developed and tailored Professional Development in Garden Education Best Practices for elementary teaching staff. This is the 6th school year of the "Bite of Bainbridge" program in Bainbridge Island School District lunch, serving with fresh produce from Bainbridge Island Farms, including local raspberries from historic Suyematsu Farm. EduCulture, in partnership with the Master of Arts in Education Program at Antioch University Seattle, produces the Leadership in Edible Education Certificate Program. Launched in 2015, this groundbreaking leadership development program is designed for formal and informal educators, and other professionals, who are interested in making a difference through edible education in Pre-K, K-12, and post-secondary schools and the wider food community. Spread over four quarterly courses, this intensive professional education program is aimed at building the cultivating the experience, knowledge, and repertoire for those who seek to work in the field of edible education, or incorporate edible education into their current practice. This is the first formal concentration in edible education of its kind in the US, open to formal and informal educators in our region. The program is situated in Central Puget Sound Region, and utilizes learning landscapes of food and school communities. We graduated our third cohort in Spring 2017. EduCulture serves as education representative to the Puget Sound Regional Food Policy Council. Major accomplishments of the Only What We Can Carry Project (OWWCC): The Only What We Can Carry project (OWWCC) uses the study of WWII, Japanese American Internment, and its impact on Bainbridge Island, to foster learning experiences about exclusion, inclusion and citizenship for schools and community. March 30, 2017 marked the 75th anniversary of the day the Bainbridge Island Japanese American community were forced to leave their homes, farms, livelihoods, and our Island, for an exclusion that would last through WWII. Bainbridge Island has a wealth of living resources that illuminate a tumultuous era and enduring story that offers a lens into history beyond textbooks. OWWCC is an educational and community development project founded to provide educators, students and citizens lived experiences that can inform a more lived curriculum, lived community and lived democracy. OWWCC partners with a consortium of local organizations to make the Bainbridge Island a living interpretive center for the study of the Japanese American experience of inclusion and exclusion. These OWWCC programs were underwritten an as act of educational as well as community service, for those who participated, for their schools, for their families, for our Island community, and for all who will benefit from the ripple it will create in classrooms and communities on Bainbridge Island and beyond. 2016-2017 Highlights included: In 2016-17, OWWCC was commissioned by Bainbridge Island School District to organize and support a special program to enhance and enrich the 11th American Studies unit on Japanese American Exclusion during WWII. The curricular purpose was to examine how US Foreign Policy during the WWII era impacted life for Bainbridge Islanders at that time, localizing their study of US Foreign Policy through the Bainbridge Island experience with WWII and Japanese American exclusion. OWWCC developed and facilitated a series of teacher trainings, digital presentations, curricular resources, and panel discussions with Bainbridge Island survivors and BISD alumni and 11th grade students. The commission also involved helping to create a BISD student award in honor of Dr. Frank Kitamoto, an BISD graduate and Bainbridge Island locally grown hero who was responsible for raising the story of Japanese American exclusion on Bainbridge Island to national status. His life's work, his calling, his passion, was about calling out injustice, overcoming differences, and healing people and communities. "Leaving Our Island Day" held in March 2017 give 6th graders at Sakai Intermediate School on Bainbridge Island the opportunity to learn firsthand from those who experienced the events surrounding World War II and the Japanese-American exclusion. Since 2010, OWWCC has been assisting the school in facilitating this unique educational tradition. Collaboration with the Bainbridge Island Historic Preservation Commission, City of Bainbridge Island and others to help preserve historic farms on Bainbridge Island, including Historic Suyematsu Farm. Helping to keep Bainbridge Island heritage alive through efforts such as the Island Heritage Strawberry Program that brings together local students and community elders for intergenerational activities. | $0 | $67,585 |
