Global Source Education is a non-profit, professional learning organization that has been serving elementary and secondary education in the Pacific Northwest and beyond since 1999. Our projects bridge classrooms and communities around crucial topics and issues facing humanity and the planet for the purpose of cultivating scholarship, stewardship, citizenship and sustainability. Global Source Education delivers our programs through our two major educational initiatives: EduCulture Edible Education Project and our Only What We Can Carry Project. During our 2014-2015 programming season, we directly served more than 2000 students/youth and educators/adults from Bainbridge Island and wider Puget Sound region. Major accomplishments of EduCulture's Edible Education Project: EduCulture creates locally grown edible education programs which bridge local farms, classrooms, lunchrooms and communities in order to foster scholarship, stewardship, citizenship, and sustainability. EduCulture is partnering with schools and farms, transforming working landscapes into landscapes of learning, presenting lived experiences that inform a more lived culture of curriculum and utilizing our community as curriculum. EduCulture has been the pioneer and leader in edible education on Bainbridge Island. We have made locally grown history with our farm-school partnerships seeding both public and private farmland in service to local education and growing public produce for the school and community food stream. What began in 2007 with a handful of teachers and farmers, has blossomed into full farm-school programs and a comprehensive and collaborative vision embraced by the students, teachers, District leadership, School Board, local farmers, families, and the wider community. Our edible education programs are serving academic needs, while growing produce for school and community food streams. In the process of inspiring young people to become co-producers in their food communities, we are preserving the tradition of local sustainable agriculture and conserving a taste of for this and future generations. On these landscapes of learning, students from local K-12 schools practice math, science and social studies skills, while they learn about our Island's rich and unique heritage and study our food community, from production and processing to consumption and recycling. During the potato harvest, student's count, weigh, sort and clean what will be served in their classrooms, lunchrooms and homes. Students raise strawberries to learn about Bainbridge Island history, and to conserve our Island strawberry heritage. They raise sugar pumpkins, peas and kale that feed their minds and bodies. Some classes choose to contribute their harvest to the Helpline Food Back and local social service agencies. Relationships with our partner farmers continue taking deeper root. We are working in greater collaboration to develop plant and animal pathways for students that mirror our local food community. Following locally raised crops (heritage strawberries, sugar pumpkins, heirloom potatoes) from master farm to instructional farm to school garden allows for greater educational parity between community and school food chains. 2014-15 Edible Education Highlights included: Edible Education Liaison to Bainbridge Island School District working with all schools, grades K-12, covering programs across curriculum utilizing instructional farms, school gardens, school kitchens, and food waste recycling. This is the fourth school year of the "Bite of Bainbridge" program in Bainbridge Island School District lunch, serving an average of 1100 students. It got its start in school lunch this year with fresh corn from Bainbridge Island Farms served in September. Suyematsu Farm raspberries are being served throughout the school year in a parfait with yogurt and granola. Through an on-going partnership with the Graduate Programs in Education at Antioch University Seattle, and their professional endorsement program in Environmental and Sustainability Education, EduCulture launched the first year of our Leadership in Edible Education Certificate Program, professional training course and a formal concentration in edible education, open to formal and informal educators in our region. The four-quarter program is situated in Central Puget Sound Region, and utilizes EduCulture's learning landscapes and edible education programs on Bainbridge Island, along with the larger food and school community as our curriculum and campus. Farm tour visits included high school students from around the Puget Sound region, college students from as far away as Europe. Bringing community together for Farm to Table dinners that celebrate and support local farmers and producers. Major accomplishments of the Only What We Can Carry Project (OWWCC): The Only What We Can Carry project (OWWCC) uses the study of WWII, Japanese American Internment, and its impact on Bainbridge Island, to foster learning experiences about exclusion, inclusion and citizenship for schools and community. Bainbridge Island has a wealth of living resources that illuminate a tumultuous era and enduring story that offers a lens into history beyond textbooks. OWWCC is an educational and community development project founded to provide educators, students and citizens lived experiences that can inform a more lived curriculum, lived community and lived democracy. March 30, 2016 will mark the 74th anniversary of the day the Bainbridge Island Japanese American community were forced to leave their homes, farms, livelihoods, and our Island, for an exclusion that would last through WWII. This day and that era that would forever change the lives of our neighbors of Japanese ancestry, along with the fabric, culture, agriculture, economy, and identity of our Island community as a whole, not to mention the world at large. As a result of our Island's unique history and heritage, OWWCC has partnered with a consortium of local organizations to make the Bainbridge Island a living interpretive center for the study of the Japanese American experience of inclusion and exclusion. OWWCC has partnered with other Island heritage organizations to turn our Island into a living interpretive center for local and regional K-12 students, educators, and community members, to study including organizing and facilitating heritage education programs on historic Suyematsu Family Farm. 2014-5 Highlights included: OWWCC co-led a series of Island field trips for school groups from around the Puget Sound region studying the immigrant and Japanese American exclusion experience. Providing professional development for educators in heritage education. Collaborating with the Bainbridge Island Historic Preservation Commission, City of Bainbridge Island, Friends of the Farms and others to help preserve historic farms on Bainbridge Island, including Historic Suyematsu Farm. Helping to keep Bainbridge Island heritage alive through efforts such as the Island Heritage Strawberry Program that brings together local students and community elders for intergenerational activities. "Leaving Our Island Day" held on March 5, 2014 gave 6th graders at Sakai Intermediate School on Bainbridge Island the opportunity to learn firsthand from those who experienced the events surrounding World War II and the Japanese-American exclusion. Since 2010, OWWCC has been assisting the school in facilitating this unique educational tradition. Historical Support and Educational Programming and Facilitation for Spring 2015 Bainbridge Performing Arts performance of "Snow Falling on Cedars". Historical and Educational Support for Summer 2015 Seattle Opera Company's performance of "American Dream". These OWWCC programs were underwritten an as act of educational as well as community service, for those who participated, for their schools, for their families, for our Island community, and for all who will benefit from the ripple it will create in classrooms and communities on Bainbridge Island and beyond.$0$45,554
