Activity 2

Education: For over 31 years, Wolf Haven International has provided guided walking tours of our wolf sanctuary and special educational programming to the public. Wolf Haven International strives to create a concern and awareness of the natural world and fill a void in environmental education. Our goal is to raise the level of environmental literacy in students of ALL ages. In 2012, over 12,000 people visited Wolf Haven International where they gained knowledge about wolves and their behavior and habitat; their controversial history in the U.S.; and their significance in the maintenance of balanced eco-systems.Field trips are a popular activity among local school districts and more than 3,000 school age children visit annually. Senior groups are also frequent participants in Wolf Haven International special programs. A wide variety of presentations are offered to both adult and youth groups, each tailored to a specific interest level and age group. Most are combined with a guided walking tour of our wolf sanctuary or native mounded prairie. Topics include: Wolves in Washington, Wolf Caf, Native Prairie Flora and Fauna, Yellowstone Wolves, Wolf Sense, World of Wolves and Vanishing Creatures. Many of our educational group programs are presented on-site, but we also do outreach on wolf recovery throughout Washington, California, Oregon and Arizona.In order to reach an even broader audience on the critical topic of wildlife conservation, Wolf Haven International offers courses through Skype for Educators, online educational programming for groups who are unable to personally visit our sanctuary. Our Skype class gives people of any age, living anywhere, a rare chance to receive objective, science-based information about wolves and other inhabitants of the natural world. Wolf Haven International, together with Global Wildlife Resources, hosts an annual Wildlife Handling and Chemical Immobilization Class. This unique field-oriented training emphasizes professional and humane animal handling and covers practical techniques to maximize field success and human & animal safety.

Activity 3

Conservation & Prairie Restoration: Wolf Haven's continued participation in the Species Survival Plan allows for the ongoing protection and preservation of two highly endangered mammals~the Mexican gray wolf and the red wolf. Wolf Haven International is one of only three pre-release facilities in the U.S. for the endangered Mexican gray wolf. Pre-release enclosures are designed to prepare wolves for life as a wild wolf. Interaction with humans is kept to a minimum and most observations are done by remote camera. As a participant in two Species Survival Plans, Wolf Haven has produced one litter of red wolf pups, five litters of Mexican gray pups, and released two packs - 11 wolves - into Apache National Forest in Arizona. Some of the first wolves released back into the wild, after an absence of over 30 years, came from Wolf Haven International.The primary goal of the Wolf Haven Prairie Project is restoration of its prairie and strengthening its role as a host for rare and threatened prairie species and stepping stone to adjacent prairies. It will serve as a model demonstration site for effective conservation on fragmented prairie via best land management practices. Restoration activities on Wolf Haven Prairie are conducted through working partnerships with The Center for Natural Lands Management, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, Washington Department of Natural Resources, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Black Hills Audubon Society. We are part of the South Sound Prairie Working Group and the Joint Base Lewis-McCord Army Compatible Use Buffer program for native prairie conservation.
