A conservation easement was contributed to Wolf Haven International in 1999. It consists of approximately 46 acres in the State of Idaho and requires the protection of the pristine and natural state of the property to be used for educational and retreat purposes. Therefore, there are no costs to the Organization for monitoring the property.

IRS990/Desc0Sanctuary: Since 1982, Wolf Haven International has rescued and provided lifetime sanctuary to over 200 wolves in need. Most of the wolves have been rescued from private ownership, a practice that is illegal in some states, but difficult to enforce. Often the animals that are rescued have been neglected or abused or are facing destruction. Many captive-born wolves are euthanized by the age of eighteen months, when they begin to reach sexual maturity. Wolf Haven provides a safe and caring environment for these animals for the remainder of their lives. Our animals receive the best care possible, with quality food, enrichment and medical care. Each circular enclosure is from 1/3 acre to 2 acres, with an 8' fence and 3' tippin and additional barrier underground. This specific design takes into account the incredible digging instincts and jumping skills of wolves, while allowing them space to freely move about. The resident wolves are typically paired, with a female and male in each enclosure, and they usually bond for life. Animal care specialists walk through the sanctuary both early morning and late afternoon. They visually check the wolves to ensure that they are healthy and moving around, and monitor food intake. If there is any concern about an animal's health, the veterinarian is called to make a visit. If the wolf presents an issue that cannot be treated in-house, he/she is caught and taken to the vet for examination. The wolves are treated with respect and every consideration is given to their innate wild nature - which has been compromised by their prior captivity by humans.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Conservation & Prairie Restoration: Wolf Haven's continued participation in two Species Survival Plan (SSP) programs allows for the ongoing protection and preservation of two highly endangered mammals - the Mexican gray wolf and the red wolf. Wolf Haven is one of only three pre-release facilities in the U.S. for the endangered Mexican gray wolf. Pre-release enclosures are designed to prepare wolves for life as a wild wolf. Interaction with humans is kept to a minimum and most observations are done by remote camera. As a participant in two SSP programs, Wolf Haven has produced three litters of Red wolf pups, eight litters of Mexican gray pups and released two packs of Mexican wolves (11 wolves) into Apache National Forest in Arizona. Some of the first wolves released back into the wild, after an absence of over 30 years, came from Wolf Haven International. The primary goal of the Wolf Haven Prairie Project is restoration of its prairie and strengthening its role as a host for rare and threatened native species. This property is also a stepping stone to adjacent prairies. It serves as a model demonstration site for effective conservation on fragmented prairie via best land management practices. Restoration activities on Wolf Haven Prairie are conducted through working partnerships with The Center for Natural Lands Management, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, Washington Department of Natural Resources, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Black Hills Audubon Society. We are part of the South Sound Prairie Working Group and the Joint Base Lewis-McCord Army Compatible Use Buffer program for native prairie conservation.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Education: For over 34 years, Wolf Haven International has provided guided walks through our wolf sanctuary and offered special educational programming to the public. Wolf Haven strives to foster concern and awareness of the natural world and fill a void in environmental education. Our goal is to raise the level of environmental literacy in people of all ages. In 2015 almost 12,000 people visited Wolf Haven, where they gained knowledge about wolves and their behavior and habitat; their controversial history in the U.S.; and their significance in the maintenance of balanced ecosystems. Field trips are a popular activity among local school districts and more than 3,000 school age children visit annually. Senior groups are also frequent participants in Wolf Haven special programs. A wide variety of presentations are offered to both adult and youth groups, each tailored to a specific interest level and age range. Most are combined with a guided walk through our wolf sanctuary and/or native mounded prairie. Topics included: Wolves of Washington, Wolf Caf, Wolf Sense, World of Wolves and Vanishing Creatures. Many of our educational group programs are presented onsite, but we also do outreach throughout Washington, California, Oregon and Arizona on wolf recovery. In order to reach an even broader audience on the critical topic of wildlife conservation, Wolf Haven offers courses through Skype in the Classroom, online educational programming for groups who are unable to personally visit our sanctuary. Our Skype class gives people of any age and living anywhere a rare chance to receive objective, science-based information about wolves and other inhabitants of the natural world.Wolf Haven is one of only two wolf sanctuaries in the U.S. with American Sanctuary Association accreditation. In 2015, Wolf Haven became the first and only wolf sanctuary accredited by the Global Federal of Animal Sanctuaries.
