Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

Overview: In June 2018, Wolf Haven International acquired the McCleery Buffalo Wolf Foundation located in Bridger, Montana. The transfer of ownership included 33 captive wolves, property home and outbuildings. The Montana facility is closed to the public. The wolves at the Montana location have had minimal human exposure and do not do well with strangers so unnecessary human contact is not forced upon them. Background: Between 1920 and 1930, Dr. E. H. McCleery purchased more than 20 wild wolves from the government, zoos and trappers. Dr. McCleerys intent was to save the remaining U.S. buffalo wolves (Canis lupus nubilus) from extinction. The wolves remained in captivity and were allowed to continue breeding. Successive operation of the wolves and property was assumed by Jack Lynch, his wife Mary and eventually Marys son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Terry Wheeler. Wolf Havens Role: Wolf Haven manages the McCleery facility as a satellite sanctuary. Assuming responsibility for the McCleery wolves gives Wolf Haven an opportunity to allow these non-socialized wolves to spend their remaining years in their current location. Wolf Haven will arrange for cryopreservation to fulfill the Foundation's mission of preserving the DNA of the buffalo wolf lineage from 1920. The property will also be proposed as a future prerelease facility in support of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan program.

Financial Statement Notes

Part II, Line 3: Explanation of Each Easement Change

The easement was transferred to another charitable organization whose mission is primarily focused on, and its organizational structure better equipped for, habitat protection and the holding of conservation easements.

Part II, Line 9: Organization Reporting of conservation easements.

A conservation easement was contributed to Wolf Haven International in 1999. It consists of approximately 46 acres in the State of Idaho and requires the protection of the pristine and natural state of the property to be used for educational and retreat purposes. The conservation easement was recorded at the appraised value of $119,170.The conservation easement is located in a neighboring State so was monitored by a volunteer living adjacent to the easement. Therefore, there were no costs to the Organization for monitoring the property.

IRS990/Desc0SANCTUARY: SINCE 1982, WOLF HAVEN INTERNATIONAL HAS RESCUED AND PROVIDED LIFETIME SANCTUARY TO OVER 300 WOLVES IN NEED. MOST OF THE WOLVES HAVE BEEN RESCUED FROM PRIVATE OWNERSHIP, A PRACTICE THAT IS ILLEGAL IN SOME STATES, BUT DIFFICULT TO ENFORCE. OFTEN THE ANIMALS THAT ARE RESCUED HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED OR ABUSED OR ARE FACING DESTRUCTION. MANY CAPTIVE-BORN WOLVES ARE EUTHANIZED BY THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN MONTHS, WHEN THEY BEGIN TO REACH SEXUAL MATURITY. WOLF HAVEN PROVIDES A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT FOR THESE ANIMALS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THEIR LIVES.OUR ANIMALS RECEIVE THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE, WITH QUALITY FOOD, ENRICHMENT AND MEDICAL TREATMENT. EACH CIRCULAR ENCLOSURE IS FROM 1/3 ACRE TO 2 ACRES, WITH AN 8 FENCE AND 3 TIPPIN AND ADDITIONAL BARRIER UNDERGROUND. THIS SPECIFIC DESIGN TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE INCREDIBLE DIGGING INSTINCTS AND JUMPING SKILLS OF WOLVES, WHILE ALLOWING THEM SPACE TO FREELY MOVE ABOUT. THE RESIDENT WOLVES ARE TYPICALLY PAIRED, WITH A FEMALE AND MALE IN EACH ENCLOSURE, AND THEY USUALLY BOND FOR LIFE. ANIMAL CARE SPECIALISTS WALK THROUGH THE SANCTUARY BOTH EARLY MORNING AND LATE AFTERNOON. THEY VISUALLY CHECK THE WOLVES TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE HEALTHY AND MOVING AROUND AND MONITOR FOOD INTAKE. IF THERE IS ANY CONCERN ABOUT AN ANIMALS HEALTH, THE VETERINARIAN IS CALLED TO MAKE A VISIT. IF THE WOLF PRESENTS AN ISSUE THAT CANNOT BE TREATED IN-HOUSE, HE/SHE IS CAUGHT AND TAKEN TO THE VETERINARIAN FOR EXAMINATION. THE WOLVES ARE TREATED WITH RESPECT AND EVERY CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THEIR INNATE WILD NATURE WHICH HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY THEIR PRIOR CAPTIVITY BY HUMANS.Wolf Haven also manages a satellite wolf sanctuary in Bridger, Montana called the McCleery Ranch. Thirty-five captive-born wolves live at the sanctuary and their care is overseen by Wendy Spencer, Wolf Havens Director of Operations. The wolves at the Montana location have had minimal human exposure, unlike many of the wolves at Wolf Havens sanctuary in Tenino, Washington. The Montana wolves do not do well with strangers so unnecessary human contact is not forced upon them. The Montana facility is closed to the public and the remaining wolves will not be allowed to continue breeding.
