Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Day One Relief rapidly responds to the critical needs of marginalized communities and people, building resilient, long-term solutions.

In 2023, we continued operating large-scale distribution sites where we coordinated the delivery of multiple semi-truckload donations, ensuring that critical resources reached our community partners and the regions most in need. We continued our work in vaccine equity, providing education about COVID-19 vaccines and setting up vaccine sites while distributing supplies, food, and other essential resources to frontline communities. Our Get Out the Vaccine phone bank remained active, connecting community members with up-to-date info on vaccination sites and access options. Key collaborators included local governments, AME/AMEZ churches, barbershops, LGBTQIA+ orgs, farmworker orgs, veterans orgs, and NAACP County Presidents. We supported schools, health, fire, and police departments, and EMS with COVID-19 materials required to maintain safe and continuous operations.

Part VI, Line 1A

In 2023, we continued large-scale distribution sites in collaboration with local governments and Emergency Managers across North Carolina. These sites facilitated the delivery of multiple semi-truckload donations, providing critical resources to our community partners and the regions served by these efforts. We continued to partner with various organizations to launch vaccine equity initiatives, educating frontline communities about COVID-19 vaccines while distributing COVID-19 supplies, food, and other essential resources. We continued our "Get Out the Vaccine" phone bank to inform community members about available vaccination sites. Key partnerships included Local Governments, African Methodist Episcopal (AME and AMEZ) churches, barber shops, LGBTQIA+ organizations, veteran organizations, and NAACP County Presidents. Our organization also facilitated supply chains for vaccines and essential supplies to elderly populations in low-income housing and nursing homes. Additionally, we supported schools, health departments, fire departments, police departments, and EMS by providing the necessary COVID-19 supplies to ensure continued operations.

IRS990/Desc0In 2023, the organization continued its large-scale disaster relief and community support operations across North Carolina. Working in close collaboration with local governments, Emergency Managers, and grassroots partners, the organization operated multiple distribution sites and coordinated the receipt and delivery of essential donated goods. During the year, the organization received and distributed five major noncash donations with a total fair market value of $11,497,820, including bottled water, personal protective equipment, hand sanitizer, household cleaning products, and laundry supplies. These resources were delivered to community partners, shelters, health departments, schools, senior facilities, and other agencies serving populations with the greatest need. The organization also deepened its partnerships with AME and AMEZ churches, NAACP county chapters, LGBTQIA+ organizations, barbershops, farmworker groups, veterans groups, and local government agencies. Through these relationships, the organization ensured that essential goods reached frontline communities, low-income households, older adults in senior housing, and residents of rural and underserved areas throughout the state.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3In 2023, we continued large-scale distribution sites in collaboration with local governments and Emergency Managers across North Carolina.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0In 2021, Day One Relief separated from its fiscal sponsor, requiring us to rebuild financially in the middle of ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts and storm-related support in eastern North Carolina. Despite this setback, we scaled our operations to meet rising community needs, often operating with only one or two staff managing large-scale logistics and distributions. During the height of the pandemic, our team regularly worked extended hours to ensure essential supplies reached affected communities. From 2021 to 2023, we continued distributing significantly more goods than originally anticipated, though limited staffing, expertise, and financial resources delayed administrative work associated with rapid growth. Our 501(c)(3) status was officially approved on November 3, 2023, with an Effective Date of Exemption retroactive to February 11, 2021. This retroactive approval enables us to complete outstanding filings and remain compliant as we continue serving frontline communities.
