Day One Relief rapidly responds to the critical needs of marginalized communities and people, building resilient, long-term solutions.
In 2022, we continued large-scale distribution sites in collaboration with local governments and Emergency Managers across North Carolina. These sites facilitated the delivery of multiple semi-truckload donations, providing critical resources to our community partners and the regions served by these efforts. We continued to partner with various organizations to launch vaccine equity initiatives, educating frontline communities about COVID-19 vaccines while distributing COVID-19 supplies, food, and other essential resources. We continued our "Get Out the Vaccine" phone bank to inform community members about available vaccination sites. Key partnerships included Local Governments, African Methodist Episcopal (AME and AMEZ) churches, LGBTQIA+ organizations, barber shops, Veteran organizations, and NAACP County Presidents. Our organization also facilitated supply chains for vaccines and essential supplies to elderly populations in low-income housing and nursing homes.

We supplied generators to establish a warm, powered distribution site and delivered hot meals to home bound seniors. We provided grocery store gift cards to replace spoiled food, and other necessities. Recognizing a community's unique needs, we worked closely with the LGBTQ center to ensure privacy and safety while fostering trust. Additionally, we distributed winter clothing, and fresh food to address immediate and ongoing needs. We responded to the water outage in Asheville (caused by cold weather) by providing pallets of bottled water to support affected communities. This effort aimed to alleviate the strain on frontline populations impacted by the disruption caused by the lack of water.”

| ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt | 0 | In 2021, Day One Relief faced a significant challenge when we parted ways with our fiscal sponsor, leaving us to start over financially. This unexpected shift occurred in the midst of our efforts to provide COVID-19 relief and ongoing support to communities impacted by storms in eastern regions over the previous two years. Despite these obstacles, we stepped up to meet the growing needs of our communities, scaling our operations to deliver critical resources. From 2021 to 2023, our organization operated with a very small teamoften just one or two peoplemanaging large-scale logistics for operations and distributions. During the height of the pandemic, we worked tirelessly, often 19-hour days, to ensure that our communities received the support they needed. By 2023, our pace slowed slightly, but the sheer volume of goods we managed to distribute exceeded our initial expectations. While our dedication to immediate relief efforts was unwavering, we lacked the staffing, expertise, and financial resources to address the administrative tasks that came with scaling up so quickly. We are pleased to share that our 501(c)(3) status was officially approved on November 3, 2023, with an Effective Date of Exemption retroactive to February 11, 2021. This approval allows us to move forward, catching up on necessary filings and ensuring we remain compliant as we continue to serve our communities. |
