THESE FOUNDING ORGANIZATIONS AND SUBSEQUENT PARTNERS FORMED THE PROTRUTH SC COALITION. THE PROTRUTHSC COALITION HAS WORKED TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY, BRIDGING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE STATE LEGISLATURE AND THE COMMUNITY TO ENSURE THE COMMUNITY KNOWS WHAT IS OCCURRING, IS EDUCATED ON THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS AND UNDERSTANDS HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES. | IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 0 | REGIONAL TALENT STRATEGY - NUMEROUS REPORTS OVER THE LAST DECADE HAVE CHRONICLED THAT ALL STUDENTS, BUT SPECIFICALLY BLACK STUDENTS, BENEFIT FROM BLACK TEACHERS. BUT IN THE CHARLESTON REGION, ONLY 12% OF THE TEACHING POPULATION IDENTIFIES WITH THE REPRESENTATION OF OVER 40% OF BLACK STUDENTS. THESE NUMBERS HAVE REMAINED STAGNANT FOR OVER 10 YEARS. IN 2018, OF CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT'S 3,312 TEACHERS, 2,336 (71%) ARE WHITE WOMEN AND 456 (14%) ARE WHITE MEN COMPARED TO 383 (12%) BLACK WOMEN AND 72 (LESS THAN ONE PERCENT) BLACK MEN. FURTHER, THERE ARE MORE WHITE MALES THAN TEACHERS OF COLOR, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN. THEREFORE, E3 IS WORKING TO FACILITATE THE CREATION OF A PIPELINE OF COMMUNITY-CENTERED, ENTREPRENEURIALLY-FOCUSED TEACHERS AND LEADERS WITH A STRONG BIAS FOR TEACHERS AND LEADERS OF COLOR THAT WILL ADVOCATE AND CHANGE THE ACADEMIC TRAJECTORY OF STUDENTS OF COLOR IN CHARLESTON.OUR TEAM CONTINUES TO WORK WITH LOCAL PARTNERS, METANOIA, CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, TEACH FOR AMERICA, AND OTHER CURRENT/FORMER SERVANT LEADER INTERNS (SLIS) AND ELLA BAKER TRAINERS OF FREEDOM SCHOOLS TO DEVELOP A FREEDOM SCHOOLS EXPANSION IN OUR REGION THAT WOULD BE A TRAINING GROUND FOR TEACHER PREPARATION. COALITION BUILDING IS A KEY STRATEGY IN THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR FOR PROMOTING EQUITY AND ADVANCEMENT OF BLACK/BROWN CHILDREN. THE COALITION ALSO AIMS TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSES OF EDUCATIONAL INEQUITIES AND DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS THEM, SUCH AS INCREASING ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, IMPROVING TEACHER DIVERSITY, AND ADVOCATING FOR POLICIES THAT SUPPORT THE EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS OF BLACK/BROWN STUDENTS. E3 BELIEVES THAT THE CHILDREN'S DEFENSE FUND (CDF) FREEDOM SCHOOLS PROGRAM, A NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE AIMED AT EMPOWERING CHILDREN, PARTICULARLY THOSE FROM HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES, THROUGH LITERACY, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IS A SOLUTION TO EDUCATIONAL INEQUITIES IN SC. DAUGHTER OF SC, MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN, CREATED FREEDOM SCHOOLS IN 1995, DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE FREEDOM SCHOOLS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 1 | COCREATION - BEGINNING IN FEBRUARY OF 2022, THE E3 FOUNDATION PARTNERED WITH FIVE COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS (CBOS) AS CRITICAL THOUGHT PARTNERS TO THE BARRIERS FACING OUR COMMUNITIES' FAMILIES AND CHILDREN. FOR OVER A YEAR THE GROUP MET; RESEARCHING, BRAINSTORMING, STRATEGIZING AND CREATING. THE RESULTS OF THIS PARTNERSHIP INCLUDED TWO ANNUAL COMMUNITY-BASED EVENTS THAT DIRECTLY IMPACT AND EMPOWER FAMILIES TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR CHILDREN, AND A LONG TERM PLAN FOR COALITION BUILDING.HOWEVER, IN ADDITION TO THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED RESULTS THE GROUP HAD SEVERAL REFLECTIONS AND SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS TO GUIDE FUTURE COMMUNITY-BASED WORK. THESE REFLECTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE RELEVANT TO NOT ONLY OTHER CBOS AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, BUT ALSO TO PHILANTHROPIC ORGANIZATIONS, FUNDERS, AND SYSTEMS THAT SUPPORT THE EDUCATION OF BLACK AND BROWN FAMILIES. THESE REFLECTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GUIDEPOSTS FOR THE WORK THAT WE DO, WHICH SHOULD ALWAYS BE CENTERED ON THE VOICES OF THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY INEQUITIES AND THE PEOPLE WHO ARE "DOING THE WORK".1) BUILD COLLABORATIVE SPACES2) PARTNER TO BUILD CAPACITY IN COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS3) CONVENE TO CO-CREATE4) ADVOCATE5) BUILD COALITIONSTHE WORK OF THIS GROUP'S EFFORTS WAS SUMMARIZED IN THE E3 FOUNDATION'S SECOND PUBLISHED REPORT ENTITLED, "THE COMMUNITY IS A KEY SOLUTION TO EDUCATIONAL INEQUITIES: A SUMMARY OF THE E3 CO-CREATION PROJECT"." |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 2 | PARENTFEST - PARENTFEST, A DAY-LONG EVENT FOR OUR REGION'S FAMILIES FULL OF EDUCATION, ENTERTAINMENT, RESOURCES AND FELLOWSHIP, WAS ENVISIONED BY THE CO-CREATION PARTNERS AS A WAY TO SERVE AS A RESOURCE FOR CHARLESTON'S BLACK AND BROWN FAMILIES. THIS EVENT INCLUDES A MORNING HARAMBEE, ROTATING EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS, FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT, AND ENDS WITH A COMMUNITY CONVERSATION. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 3 | COMMUNITY ASSESSMENTS - COMMUNITY WIDE ASSESSMENTS ARE A RESOURCE THAT E3 PROVIDES TO THE COMMUNITY TO ENSURE PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS KNOW THE ACADEMIC LEVELS OF THEIR CHILDREN. THE E3 FOUNDATION HIRES EDUCATORS WHO ADMINISTER THE ASSESSMENTS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF EDUCATING AND EMPOWERING OUR COMMUNITY ON THE ACADEMIC STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THEIR SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN. DURING THESE EVENTS ALL STUDENTS PRE-K - 5TH GRADE WERE ASSESSED IN BOTH READING AND MATH. IT IS THE GOAL OF THE FOUNDATION TO ENSURE THAT PARENTS, FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF THEIR STUDENTS AND ARE EQUIPPED TO SUPPORT THEM MORE EFFECTIVELY DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 4 | FREEDOM SCHOOLS - CDF FREEDOM SCHOOLS PROGRAM HAS ITS ORIGINS IN THE MISSISSIPPI FREEDOM SUMMER PROJECT OF 1964, WHICH BROUGHT COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO MISSISSIPPI TO SECURE JUSTICE AND VOTING RIGHTS FOR BLACK CITIZENS. THESE EARLY FREEDOM SCHOOLS AIMED AT KEEPING BLACK CHILDREN AND YOUTH SAFE AND GIVING THEM RICH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES THAT WERE NOT OFFERED IN MISSISSIPPI'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IN A VARIETY OF MAKESHIFT SETTINGS, COLLEGE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED INSTRUCTION IN READING, WRITING, HUMANITIES, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE ALONG WITH SUBJECTS NOT TAUGHT IN MISSISSIPPI PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SUCH AS BLACK HISTORY AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. ALL OF THEIR INSTRUCTION WAS TAILORED TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN AND YOUTH TO BECOME INDEPENDENT THINKERS, PROBLEM SOLVERS, AND AGENTS OF CHANGE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES.CDF OPENED THE FIRST TWO CDF FREEDOM SCHOOLS SITES IN 1995 TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN WHO LACKED ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY LITERACY PROGRAMS DURING THE SUMMER AND HAS GROWN TO SEVERAL SITES ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS. THE CDF FREEDOM SCHOOLS PROGRAM TODAY IS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE READING, LANGUAGE SKILLS, AND INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS; STRENGTHEN FAMILIES.CURRENTLY IN THE STATE THERE ARE 6 ACTIVE FREEDOM SCHOOL SITES WITH TWO LOCATED IN CHARLESTON, BOTH WITH LIMITED CAPACITY. E3 HAS WORKED TO BRINGING THE SOUTH CAROLINA FREEDOM SCHOOL SITES TOGETHER FOR STRATEGIC COLLABORATIVE PLANNING FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUPPORTING THE EXPANSION OF CURRENT SITES, AND LAUNCHING NEW SITES |
