IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Community Market/Food Shelf: After the civil unrest of 2020, a food desert was left in the surrounding areas of Lake Street. Du Nord Craft Spirits volunteered their physical location for a pop-up food shelf that served the community for 2 weeks, meant to be temporary support. This happened before the Du Nord Foundation was established. Some months later, after the Du Nord Foundation was established, the board members realized that the need for food security was still present in the community & had been highlighted by the COVID19 pandemic. In November 2020 the Du Nord Foundation decided to start planning the reopening of a formal food shelf which will reopen its doors in February 2021 with its new name: Du Nord Foundation Community Market. In between November & December of 2020, we applied for & received 2 grants for this purpose. One from Hennepin County $35,000 & one from the City of Minneapolis $46,096. With these funds we were able to purchase operational supplies (basic shelving, carts, etc), 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, perishable & nonperishable items to start distributing the following months. Trica Trowbridge was hired as the Community Market Director in January 2021. So far she has helped set the infrastructure of these initiatives in order for the Du Nord Foundation to be able to distribute around 18,500lbs of food to help 2,200 neighbors in a month.
