Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The work of the public lands interpretive association is facilitated through cooperative agreements with the usda forest service, the bureau of land management and a special use permit with the usda forest service.activities are accomplished through the operation of bookstores in federal visitor centers in new mexico and arizona, an active public lands recreation information based website, www.publiclands.org, operation of the nm public lands information center in santa fe, nm, and by operating and providing all interpretive services for three campgrounds on the williams ranger district of the kaibab national forest in arizona.

The public lands interpretive association will inspire and educate the public about the nauteal and cultural heritage resources of america's public lands. The work of the associationis is facilitated through cooperative agreements with the usda forest service and the bureau of land management and a special use permit with the usda forest service.

The compensation amount for the executive director was established by comparing compensation for other executive directors working for cooperating associations with comparable gross sales, complexity of work and number of employees. No changes in compensation for the executive director have been made for several years. There are no bonus or additional compensation agreements between the executive director and the board of directors. Compensation for the director of special projects was established by comparison with similar positions in other cooperating associations. IRS990/MissionDesc0"THE PUBLIC LANDS INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION WILL INSPIRE AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE RESOURCES OF AMERICA'S PUBLIC LANDS" IS THE STATED MISSION OF THE PUBLIC LANDS INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION (PLIA). THE WORK OF THE ASSOCIATION IS FACILITATED THROUGH COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS WITH THE USDA FOREST SERVICE, THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT AND THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, A SPECIAL USE PERMIT WITH THE USDA FOREST SERVICE AND A CONTRACT WITH THE VALLES CALDERA TRUST.ACTIVITIES ARE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE OPERATION OF BOOKSTORES IN FEDERAL VISITOR CENTERS IN NEW MEXICO, OKLAHOMA AND ARIZONA, AN ACTIVE PUBLIC LANDS RECREATION AND INFORMATION BASED WEBSITE WWW.PUBLICLANDS.ORG, OPERATION OF THE NM PUBLIC LANDS INFORMATION CENTER IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, CONDUCTING ALL RECREATION BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE WORK FOR THE VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE AND OPERATING AND PROVIDING ALL INTERPRETIVE SERVICES FOR FOUR CAMPGROUNDS ON THE WILLIAMS RANGER DISTRICT OF THE KAI

IN ADDITION TO HIRING THE MANAGERS AND STAFF TO OPERATE THREE CAMPGROUNDS PLIA ALSO FUNDS AN INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST POSITION TO PLAN, MANAGE AND IMPLEMENT INTERPRETIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR THE VISITING PUBLIC. THESE PROGRAMS ARE PRESENTED BY THE INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST AND OTHER GUEST SPEAKERS AND ARE GIVEN FREE OF CHARGE DURING THE SUMMER CAMPING SEASON. THE PROGRAMS CONSIST OF: 1. EVENING INTERPRETIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, 2. GUIDED INTERPRETIVE WALKS ON FOREST TRAILS ADJACENT TO THE CAMPGROUNDS 3. INTERACTIVE PROGRAMMING FOR ALL AGES BUT MOST SPECIFICALLY TARGETED TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH. IN AN EFFORT TO REACH THE VISITING PUBLIC IN THE OFF-SEASON PLIA HAS ALSO FUNDED THE CONSTRUCTION OF INTERPRETIVE PANELS, KIOSKS, SELF-GUIDED TRAILS AND ACCOMPANYING BROCHURE AND CHECKLISTS FOR THE FLORA, FAUNA, REPTILES AND BIRDS THAT CAN BE ACCESSED IN THE CAMPGROUNDS AND ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AT THE NEARBY FOREST SERVICE OFFICES IN WILLIAMS, ARIZONA. IN FISCAL YEAR 2018 DURING THE SUMMER CAMPGROUND SEASON OF 16 WEEKS, PLIA PRESENTED 66 PROGRAMS THAT REACHED A TOTAL OF 1,111 PEOPLE.

IN 2018, PLIA SOLD 7,156 OF ALL COMBINED PASSES. AT SABINO CANYON AND PALISADES, PLIA SELLS DAILY, WEEKLY AND ANNUAL DISTRICT/FOREST PASSES AND THE AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL PASS. THE PASSES ARE SOLD DIRECTLY TO THE PUBLIC IN THE VISITOR CENTERS. THE VOLUME OF PASS SALES EACH YEAR AT SABINO CANYON IS IMPACTED BY THE AVAILABILTY OF THE FOREST SERVICE TO STAFF AND SELL PASSES AT THE ENTRANCE STATION AS WELL AS THE INCREASE IN VISITORS FROM YEAR-TO-YEAR. PALISADES SALES ARE IMPACTED BY CHANGES IN VISITATION.THE RED ROCK COUNTRY PASSES ARE SOLD BY PLIA ON ITS WEBSITE AS A CONVENIENCE TO VISITORS WHO WANT TO BUY THE PASS BEFORE THEY VISIT THE RED ROCK RECREATION FEE AREA.BY SELLING THESE PASSES EITHER THROUGH ON SITE BOOKSTORES OR ON LINE, PLIA IS PROVIDING A SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC WHO MUST HAVE THE PASSES TO BE IN COMPLIANCE BEFORE USING THE RESOURCE AND ALLOWING ACCESS TO THE AREA WHICH HELPS PLIA FULFILL IT'S MISSION TO INSPIRE AND EDUCATE PULBIC ABOUT AMERICA'S PUBLIC LANDS. PLIA HAS PUBLISHED GUIDES TO THE RIO GRANDE, DOLORES AND CHAMA RIVERS, GUIDES TO BOSQUE DEL APACHE AND WICHITA MOUNTAINS WILDLIFE REFUGES, THE LINCOLN, COCONINO, KAIBAB NATIONAL FORESTS AND THE SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST AND PECOS WILDERNESS.
