Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The work of the public lands interpretive association is facilitated through cooperative agreements with the usda forest service, the bureau of land management and a special use permit with the usda forest service.activities are accomplished through the operation of bookstores in federal visitor centers in new mexico and arizona, an active public lands recreation information based website, www.publiclands.org, operation of the nm public lands information center in santa fe, nm, and by operating and providing all interpretive services for three campgrounds on the williams ranger district of the kaibab national forest in arizona.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Campgrounds-In fy 2012-2013, PLIA was awarded a five year special use permit to operate three campgrounds for the USDA Forest Service on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest in Williams, Arizona. By operating these campgrounds PLIA supports its mission by providing an environment where forest visitors may prolong their stay by camping and facilitates the inspiration and education of the public about all aspects of the Kaibab National Forest in particular and America's public lands in general by providing both a safe and secure environment for camping as well as a variety of educational and interpretive programs available to everyone. In addition to hiring the managers and staff to operate three campgrounds PLIA also funds an interpretive specialist position to plan, manage and implement interpretive and educational programming for the visiting public staying in the campground. These programs are presented free of charge throughout the summer camping season and consist of evening talks, walks on a series of interpretive trails built and maintained by PLIA, and a variety of programs and citizen science opportunities presented by the interpretive specialist and selected guest speakers as well as interactive programming for all ages but most specifically targeted to children and youth. In an effort to reach the visiting public in the off-season PLIA has also funded the construction of interpretive panels, kiosks, self-guided trails and accompanying brochure and checklists for the flora, fauna, reptiles and birds that can be accessed on the ground or through the local Forest Service office. During fiscal year 2012-2013 summer campground season of 16 weeks, PLIA presented 65 programs with attendance of 1080 people.
Activity 3
Other Program Services Description(Aid for Interpretive Programs)-Publications - In fiscal year 2011-2012 PLIA printed a series of six-part recreational maps to New Mexico. The New Mexico maps have been so popular that it was necessary to reprint them on water proof paper in fiscal year 2012-2013 which reconfirms that there indeed is a need for such maps to provide detailed and extensive information on public lands recreational opportunities available in the state both by location on the map as well as through the interpretive information included in the narrative. www.publiclands.orgIn fiscal year 2012-2013 PLIA started the process of moving the maps on the website to a Google map platform for ease of use as well as to insure that public lands location information is correct and not misleading. The website designed and maintained by PLIA is a repository of useful information on public lands recreation that was developed specifically to focus on getting information to the public from the users point of view. The website includes recreation information for every western state that can be searched by a variety of ways including state, recreation opportunities, agency, resource name etc. The website features a map center which provides maps for every western state with hunting units marked and the appropriate map for each unit identified. With one click, all of the maps for a particular hunting unit can be ordered from PLIA and are sent with in one or two days. The website has a Fire News page to provide the most up-to-date fire information for Arizona and New Mexico and where people can go on public lands when certain areas are closed or not accessible. For other western states, the Fire News page provides links to current fire information. The website also includes a section on the history of public lands, and an opportunity to purchase books, maps, and other merchandise. In addition, PLIA continues to provide online its popular Dolores River Guide and a downloadable PDF file for the Wild and Scenic Rio Chama.

IRS990/Description0Book Stores-In fiscal year 2012-2013 PLIA operated 13 bookstores under participating agreements with the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service at various sites in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In addition, PLIA operates an online store and map center at www.publiclands.org . The bookstores operated by PLIA are an integral part of the mission of PLIA which is to "inspire and educate the public about the natural and cultural resources of America's public lands," and are operated as a service to visitors to public lands to support and enhance visitor services provided by the participating land management agency. PLIA sales areas carry interpretive and educational materials that support the missions of both the individual agency as well as that of PLIA. The bookstores are requested by the agencies that have a mandate to educate the public about the lands they manage but have no authority to operate a sales area. All items sold by PLIA in these site specific sales areas are selected for their interpretive and educational value, are reviewed and approved by the appropriate land management agency, fall within select categories of subject matter related to and appropriate for each individual area and differ from area to area. In addition to operating sales areas in federal visitor centers and providing staffing necessary to operate the store and provide information to the public on the agencies behalf, PLIA provides additional services such as selling annual agency and national park passes, training agency front desk personnel in customer service and public lands information resources, and funding appropriate agency educational and interpretive projects including, for example, the upgrading of the orientation movie shown in the visitor center at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and supporting the recognition of volunteers assisting in various visitor centers. In addition, PLIA provided funding to bus children to public lands in northern New Mexico in order to participate in annual enviornmental education programs.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation6OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Other Program Services Description(Aid for Interpretive Programs)-Publications - In fiscal year 2011-2012 PLIA printed a series of six-part recreational maps to New Mexico.
