Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The work of the public lands interpretive association is facilitated through cooperative agreements with the usda forest service, the bureau of land management and a special use permit with the usda forest service.activities are accomplished through the operation of bookstores in federal visitor centers in new mexico and arizona, an active public lands recreation information based website, www.publiclands.org, operation of the nm public lands information center in santa fe, nm, and by operating and providing all interpretive services for three campgrounds on the williams ranger district of the kaibab national forest in arizona.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Campgrounds-PLIA operates four campgrounds, under a special use permit with the USDA Forest Service, on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest in Williams, Arizona. The operating of these campgrounds supports the mission of PLIA by providing an environment where forest visitors may prolong their stay by camping and facilitates the inspiration and education of the public about all aspects of the Kaibab National Forest in particular and America's public lands in general by providing both a safe and secure environment for camping as well as a variety of educational and interpretive programs available to everyone. In addition to hiring staff to operate the campground PLIA funds a position to plan, manage and implement interpretive and educational programming for the visiting public staying in the campground. These programs are presented free of charge, throughout the summer camping season and consist of evening talks, walks on a series of interpretive trails built and maintained by PLIA, as well as a variety of guest speakers and interactive programming for all ages but most specifically targeted to children and youth. In an effort to reach the visiting public in the off-season PLIA has also funded the construction of interpretive panels, kiosks, self-guided trails and accompanying brochure and checklists for the flora, fauna, reptiles and birds that can be accessed on the ground or through the local Forest Service office. During fiscal year 2011 summer campground season of 16 weeks PLIA presented 58 programs with attendance of 968 people. Program attendance was down for the year because of the closure of Kaibab Lake Campground for most of the summer for remodeling.
Activity 3
Other Program Services Description(Aid for Interpretive Programs)-Supported the education and interpretive programs of the federal government.

IRS990/Description0Book Stores-In fiscal year 2011 PLIA operated 15 bookstores under participating agreements with the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service at various sites in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma, at the New Mexico Public Lands Information Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico and online at www.public lands.org. PLIA bookstores support the educational mission of the Association and are operated as a service to visitors to public lands to both support and enhance visitor services provided by the participating land management agency. PLIA sales areas carry interpretive and educational materials that support the missions of both the individual agency as well as that of PLIA. The bookstores are requested by the agencies that have a mandate to educate the public about the lands they manage but have no authority to operate a sales area. All items sold by PLIA in these site specific sales areas are selected for their interpretive and educational value, are reviewed and approved by the appropriate land management agency, fall within select categories of subject matter related to and appropriate for each individual area and differ from area to area. In addition to operating sales areas in federal visitor centers and providing staffing necessary to operate the store and provide information to the public on the agencies behalf. In FY2011 PLIA benefited its partner agencies by participating in variety of activities and outreach events. Included in the projects PLIA provided were transportation and educational supplies for school children to attend an agency outreach event, the recognition of volunteers, money to fund the changes to an outdated bookstore, additional visitor center staffing, a projector used to provide interpretive programming, an emergency phone at a remote location, the rental of space to provide a geology lecture and the Third Thursday Lecture Series on public lands and public land use. PLIA also trains agency front desk personnel in customer service and public lands information resources and funds appropriate agency educational and interpretive needs as they arise and as funding is available.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation5OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Publications-PLIA's publishing program focuses on publications that are important to understanding the resource and are not available to the public through other sources. PLIA's most significant book in terms of numbers published is Ducks at a Distance: a water foul identification guide, which is in its 12th printing with over 886,000 copies in circulation over 27 years. In addition, PLIA has also published guides to the Rio Grande, Dolores and Chama Rivers and guides to Bosque del Apache and Wichita Mountains wildlife refuges and the Lincoln, Coconino, Kaibab and Santa Fe national forests, and the Pecos Wilderness. In 2011, PLIA reprinted the most popular sections of the six-part recreational map to New Mexico. This map was printed in response to a need identified by the NM State Office of the Bureau of Land Management and addresses extensive public lands recreational opportunities available in the state both by location on the map as well as in the interpretive information included in the narrative. PLIA continues to provide two of its most popular river guides to the Dolores and Chama Rivers as a downloadable PDF file at www.publiclands.org.
