FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

To create a world that welcomes all people with disabilities by empowering them, by influencing the non-disabled, by serving as liaison between the two groups, and by working towrd a goal of economic independence through employment.

Be successful in their candidacies. Also while managers are commonly trained about why it is good to hire and welcome people with disabilities, they do not learn how to successfully interact with, accommodate, manage, and guide people with disabilities. Managers are commonly afraid even to ask questions that would lead them to that knowledge. We have developed a well- received training program, presented by people with disablities, that advances manager's skills in these areas. Sdi takes a multifaceted approach to reach desired outcome objectives with role model companies, partner organizations, and people with disabilities: collaborate with the role model company when an apparently qualified individual with a disability applies for a job (and when the individual approves) so that the role model can look at the job candidate and not lose track of him or her in the mass of on-line applications that attend most every job opening and work with and provide training to role model companies to help their recruiters and hiring managers to become aware of those practices that have the unintended effect of excluding job candidates with disablities. Provide a training program and individual consulting to disabled job candidates to help them understand the role model companies' hiring processes and techniques so that the candidates can work to make themselves attractive to potential employers. Engage partner organizations in the training and recruiting process, building collaborative relationships between the role model companies and partner organizations. As part of this overall initiative, sdi engages in community education and outreach efforts.

As north america's only recurring conference focused on universal housing and neighborhoods, the goals of these summits are to bring about community integration and participation while enhancing the independence of all people at home and throughout their daily lives. Planning is underway for a universal design summit which will be held in the fall of 2015. Following universal design protocals, designers and builders create inclusive, attractive and never obvious homes and neighborhoods that integrate features that improve function and usability for everyone. Universal design is a superior approach to design and construction that can be achived in all house sizes and at all price points.

IRS990/Desc0THE NEXT BIG STEP (NBS) IS THE EMPLOYMENT INITIATIVE CREATED BY THE STARKLOFF DISABILITY INSTITUTE TO REACH OUT TO CORPORATIONS AND LINK THEM TO QUALIFIED JOB SEEKERS WITH DISABLITIES. SDI HAS IDENTIFIED COMPANIES AS "ROLE MODELS" AS THEY ARE EXTREMELY RECEPTIVE TO WORKING WITH SDI TOWARD TAKING THE NEXT BIG STEP IN THEIR OWN ARENAS. ADDITIONALLY, SDI COLLABORATES WITH OUR "PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS" (AGENCIES WORKING WITH DISABLED PEOPLE) TO LOCATE CANDIDATES FOR THE ROLE MODEL COMPANIES. AGENCIES WHO TYPICALLY TRAIN PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES OFTEN DO NOT HAVE EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HIRING COMPANIES WANT. BY COLLABORATING WITH ROLE MODEL COMPANIES' RECRUITERS AND HIRING MANAGERS TO DESIGN AND PROVIDE THE TRAINING, WE ARE WORKING TOWARD ENABLING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR CANDIDACIES.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0TO CREATE A WORLD THAT WELCOMES ALL PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES BY EMPOWERING THEM, BY INFLUENCING THE NON-DISABLED, BY SERVING AS LIAISON BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS, AND BY WORKING TOWRD A GOAL OF ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE THROUGH EMPLOYMENT.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR CANDIDACIES.
