Form 990, Part III

Karis is located in the metropolitan denver area; however, we have established a local and national reputation for success. We receive referrals and requests for information daily, not only from the denver area and throughout colorado but also from around the country. Currently, 1/3 of our community members moved to karis from states outside colorado. Karis is the least restrictive environment for mental health programming. It is the only therapeutic community of its kind in the region and one of only a few nationwide. Through the generous support of donors, we can offer our program for as low as 655/month. Our fee is considered extremely low- income housing in denver and helps teach financial awareness, accountability, and realistic integration into the mainstream of life. Our program offers individual check-ins, six weekly support group meetings, evening community meals, household supplies, utilities, onsite peer support, and mental health services. Private treatment centers comparable to karis often cost upwards of 10,000 per month, resulting in inaccessibility to individuals managing lower incomes. Without karis, many community members would be stuck in cycles of instability, further perpetuating what often feels like unmanageable situations. Over the past fiscal year, karis experienced the following major accomplishments: o 85% of our community members completed each objective: consistent daily structure, reduced hospitalization, and positive transition to independent living. Karis tracks community members' daily structure (employment, volunteer work, treatment programming, continuing education) before entering the program as well as the ability to create or maintain structure during and after the program. Upon arrival, 45% had no daily structure. During their participation at karis, at least 80% successfully maintained structure for a minimum of 20 hours each week. In the fiscal year 2021-2022, community members had a combined total of 205 hospitalizations throughout their lifetimes, 35 combined hospitalizations the year before their stay at karis, and only 4 hospitalizations during their time at karis. O our alumni group grew and strengthened locally and out of state due to the accessibility of virtual meetings. O we expanded our program offerings by adding a full-time operations and community services manager to our team. This position focuses on providing much-needed case management and wrap-around services critical for our prospective and current community members as well as our alumni. O we established a diversity, equity, and inclusivity (dei) committee comprising both board members and staff. This committee seeks to support initiatives such as completing an audit of karis' space and programming, reviewing and implementing policies, and outlining a plan for staff to complete dei training. O karis continues to serve as a teaching site for the university of denver students in the doctor of clinical psychology and master of social work programs. Each year, these paid interns provide excellent service to karis' community members while also being offered a valuable learning experience. Last year, karis added the master of social work program at metropolitan state university to their list of partners

WE RECEIVE REFERRALS AND REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION DAILY, NOT ONLY FROM THE DENVER AREA AND THROUGHOUT COLORADO BUT ALSO FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY. CURRENTLY, 1/3 OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS MOVED TO KARIS FROM STATES OUTSIDE COLORADO. KARIS IS THE LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMMING. IT IS THE ONLY THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY OF ITS KIND IN THE REGION AND ONE OF ONLY A FEW NATIONWIDE. THROUGH THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF DONORS, WE CAN OFFER OUR PROGRAM FOR AS LOW AS 655/MONTH. OUR FEE IS CONSIDERED EXTREMELY LOW- INCOME HOUSING IN DENVER AND HELPS TEACH FINANCIAL AWARENESS, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND REALISTIC INTEGRATION INTO THE MAINSTREAM OF LIFE. OUR PROGRAM OFFERS INDIVIDUAL CHECK-INS, SIX WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS, EVENING COMMUNITY MEALS, HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES, UTILITIES, ONSITE PEER SUPPORT, AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. PRIVATE TREATMENT CENTERS COMPARABLE TO KARIS OFTEN COST UPWARDS OF 10,000 PER MONTH, RESULTING IN INACCESSIBILITY TO INDIVIDUALS MANAGING LOWER INCOMES. WITHOUT KARIS, MANY COMMUNITY MEMBERS WOULD BE STUCK IN CYCLES OF INSTABILITY, FURTHER PERPETUATING WHAT OFTEN FEELS LIKE UNMANAGEABLE SITUATIONS. OVER THE PAST FISCAL YEAR, KARIS EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: O 85% OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS COMPLETED EACH OBJECTIVE: CONSISTENT DAILY STRUCTURE, REDUCED HOSPITALIZATION, AND POSITIVE TRANSITION TO INDEPENDENT LIVING. KARIS TRACKS COMMUNITY MEMBERS' DAILY STRUCTURE (EMPLOYMENT, VOLUNTEER WORK, TREATMENT PROGRAMMING, CONTINUING EDUCATION) BEFORE ENTERING THE PROGRAM AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO CREATE OR MAINTAIN STRUCTURE DURING AND AFTER THE PROGRAM. UPON ARRIVAL, 45% HAD NO DAILY STRUCTURE. DURING THEIR PARTICIPATION AT KARIS, AT LEAST 80% SUCCESSFULLY MAINTAINED STRUCTURE FOR A MINIMUM OF 20 HOURS EACH WEEK. IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2021-2022, COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAD A COMBINED TOTAL OF 205 HOSPITALIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIMES, 35 COMBINED HOSPITALIZATIONS THE YEAR BEFORE THEIR STAY AT KARIS, AND ONLY 4 HOSPITALIZATIONS DURING THEIR TIME AT KARIS. O OUR ALUMNI GROUP GREW AND STRENGTHENED LOCALLY AND OUT OF STATE DUE TO THE ACCESSIBILITY OF VIRTUAL MEETINGS. O WE EXPANDED OUR PROGRAM OFFERINGS BY ADDING A FULL-TIME OPERATIONS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES MANAGER TO OUR TEAM. THIS POSITION FOCUSES ON PROVIDING MUCH-NEEDED CASE MANAGEMENT AND WRAP-AROUND SERVICES CRITICAL FOR OUR PROSPECTIVE AND CURRENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS WELL AS OUR ALUMNI. O WE ESTABLISHED A DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSIVITY (DEI) COMMITTEE COMPRISING BOTH BOARD MEMBERS AND STAFF. THIS COMMITTEE SEEKS TO SUPPORT INITIATIVES SUCH AS COMPLETING AN AUDIT OF KARIS' SPACE AND PROGRAMMING, REVIEWING AND IMPLEMENTING POLICIES, AND OUTLINING A PLAN FOR STAFF TO COMPLETE DEI TRAINING.
