Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

We also had an 84% success rate in returning lost dogs to their owners, which is more than two times the national average of 37.63%. We are committed to keeping animals in homes with the families that love them; however, we are here to help people in their time of need. During fy18, 2,281 animals were surrendered to us, which was a 9.5% increase from the prior year. In fy18, 2,822 animals were adopted. The average length of stay at our shelter is 10 days for all animals. Our dedicated animal care team provided 63,460 days of care as well as 126,460 meals. We walked 8,583 miles with our dogs, cuddled 1,219 cats, socialized 749 small mammals, and gave extra love and attention to 137 fearful, sensitive and anxious cats through our pets needing patience program. Some animals with special needs need special people; not every animal that comes to larimer humane society is ready to be adopted. In fy18, our foster volunteers provided the love and nurturing that 409 animals needed to prepare them for their new families. Because northern colorado is such a great place for pets, we are able to look beyond the borders of our county and state in order to help communities in need. We transfer animals into our shelter from communities where adoption numbers are low, quality of life is reduced and the likelihood of euthanasia is increased due to lack of time, space and resources. 735 animals were transferred in or out of our shelter to give them the best opportunity for a second chance; 509 animals were transferred into our shelter, and 226 animals were transferred out of our shelter. We work with 46 different transfer partners across the country. Thanks to the space provided to us by our new shelter in fy18, we were able to increase the number of animals we transferred into our shelter by 14%.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Our larger space also allowed us to expand our partnership with colorado state university and fort range community college to provide hands-on learning for their veterinary medicine and veterinary technician students.
