Animal care & placement - continued: every lost or abandoned animal that comes to larimer humane society is given the love and care they need to feel safe until their owners can reclaim them or until they find a new forever home to call their own. We do everything we can to provide the best level of care for animals at larimer humane society. We understand being in a kennel can be stressful for the animals. We help to reduce their stress and comfort them while they are with us. Volunteers walk dogs multiple times a day, giving them exercise and fresh air. Cats are given tender loving care through socialization with people brushing and petting them. Our behavior and enrichment team, as well as our animal care technicians, work with the animals to address individual behavioral and social problems. By giving each animal individual time and attention to soothe the tired and stressed nerves, we are giving them a second chance at life and saving lives, one animal at a time. In fy 2016, larimer humane society: -welcomed 5,955 animals into our shelter -reunited 1,689 lost animals with their families (85% of stray dogs and 19% of stray cats) -helped 3,022 animals find their forever homes (1,367 cats, 1,135 dogs, 98 rabbits, 161 birds, 34 reptiles, 224 small mammals, 3 barn yard animals) -celebrated a 92% live release rate while maintaining an average stay of 9 days for animals in our care -cared for 535 animals in loving foster homes -transferred 667 pets (474 in and 193 out) to give them the best shot possible for a second chance at love -hosted our 6th annual placement partner brunch to thank more than 50 other shelters and rescues we work with to find pets loving forever homes -transferred in 10 dogs that were rescued from a dog meat farm in south korea by humane society international and partnered with animal house rescue and grooming and black dog animal rescue to find them loving forever homes -provided a safe haven for 3,005 strays (1,196 cats, 1,664 dogs, 41 rabbits, 47 birds, 9 reptiles, 40 small mammals, 8 barn yard) -combined training and enrichment to provide 149 high energy dogs with more time out of their kennel, extra toys and enrichment, doggie massages from volunteers and extra time from staff and volunteers for training to help these dogs become more adoptable through our mellow mutts program -provided 175 fearful, sensitive and high arousal cats with special handling, extra attention from staff and volunteers, calming activities and clicker training to pets to increase adoptability of these longer-term residents -provided dog obedience classes to 28 dogs and owners to teach them basic obedience with an emphasis on building a strong, positive relationship between dog and owner. We utilize clicker training and positive reinforcement techniques where dogs and owners alike build trust and confidence -partnered with aspen grove veterinarian care to provide our high energy and long term resident dogs the chance to go to aspen grove for a "fur- lough" play group twice a week. During this playgroup dogs in our care get to get out of the shelter for the morning and play with other dogs.
