Mission and Program Overview
Mission
Learning Home Volunteers' (LHV) mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of their economic situation, enter kindergarten prepared. LHV operates exclusively in SF Bay Area, working with low income families and their children ages 2-5. In 2019, our first year of business, we were laser focused on recruitment and launch of our first cohort of children. The most exciting achievement is the high level of engagement of the families. We see growth, not only in the children's abilities, but the families' ability to create learning opportunities for their children with ease. We are impressed and joyous to see these transformations. Fostered by these achievements, we are increasing our enrollment and impact to under-served families.

“We launched our Learning At Home program in 2020 as a result of COVID. This program delivers open-ending learning materials, books and custom learning activities to each participants home every learning session. Each learning session contains 5 - 7 learning activities, 3 books read aloud by our storyteller, and custom learning activities specifically chosen based on their interests. Each session is introduced by videos in both English and Spanish providing different ideas on how to use the learning materials with the child. At the end of each session, the family coordinator visits to discuss the session, answer questions and share the joy of the exploration done by the child in the home and a new box is delivered. Design, development and preparation of the learning materials is done by volunteers in their homes.”

This is a significant change in the relationship that parents have with their child, but an essential one. To help our parents make this change, our family coordinator is key. Not only is she responsible for the bi-weekly delivery learning materials to the home but maintaining a relationship with the parents. During her visits with the parents, she hears about each child's exploration and mastery. She answer questions that may have come up during the learning session. Finally she is responsible for all supportive materials development which include the video sessions regarding activity learning ideas, surveys and intake activities are done by the family coordinator as well. This close relationship is reason for our high level of parent engagement. |

LHV operates exclusively in SF Bay Area, working with low income families and their children ages 2-5. COVID created new challenges for our organization requiring us to pivot from a home visitation program. Our investment in helping parent find their power as educators and the technology foundation we put into place, allowed to pivot and deploy our new program delivery in 3 weeks after the shut down. The parents have taken the lead in their child's preparation for school and they are doing a great job! We couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments. |
