RESTORATIVE JUSTICE Founded by neighborhood volunteers in 2005, Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice (SLRJ) became incorporated as an independent non-profit in August 2019.Due to the pandemic and the loss of the SLRJ office in the unrest in 2020 following George Floyds murder, SLRJ staff worked from home in 2020 and 2021. In February, 2022 SLRJ re-located to an office in the Ivy Building of South Minneapolis. Restorative Conferences: Due to the pandemic and impacts on policing after the murder of George Floyd the number of teenagers being cited for offenses in Minneapolis continued to be at a decreased level. In 2022 SLRJ received 4 referrals of youth cited for offenses. A pilot project with the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights, led to a paid contract in 2022. The Department of Civil Rights referred 3 complainants to SLRJ when the complaint did not meet civil rights criteria but harm had occurred. Community interest and requests for restorative processes outside of the legal system remained high. In 2022 a sampling of requests included: support regarding theft of mail and financial fraud, consultation with parents regarding a child who was cancelled by his peer group and facilitation of a restorative process regarding past gender-based violence.Restorative Circles: SLRJ continued a partnership with City of Nations Storytelling to conduct a series of healing circles for immigrant business owners whose businesses were damaged in the unrest following the murder of George Floyd. The project culminated in the production of a documentary which was shown twice at area theaters.Information and referral: SLRJ responded to approximately 40 requests for information and referral mostly from individuals exploring restorative options and from community groups seeking education and advice regarding the use of restorative practices.Education and Outreach: Staff gave presentations and trainings regarding restorative justice and its use to social work supervisors, church groups, and fire intervention specialists. With a co-researcher from St. Cloud State University, SLRJ published the findings of a study regarding the use of restorative justice to respond to gender-based violence. Over 40 people attended the on-line presentation of the results and the summary report and research paper are now available to the public.Strategic Visioning: Throughout 2022 the SLRJ Board and Staff participated in a strategic visioning process facilitated by an outside consultant.-$69,663
SEWARD VACCINE EQUITY PROJECT: As of 2021, SLRJ is the fiscal sponsor for a project to provide Covid-19 vaccines to underserved populations in the Seward neighborhood. In 2022, the Seward Vaccine Equity Project (SVEP) expanded its organizing beyond the previous focus on Somali folks, to the Oromo community. They held two COVID-19 immunization/booster clinics at the Tawfiq Islamic Center in Seward, resulting in the vaccinations of over 100 people, including a dozen who received their first COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, SVEP members gave interviews on Minnesota Public Radio, The Atlantic, Sahan Journal, and the New York Times to discuss community COVID-19 vaccination efforts and the recent measles surge in Minneapolis. For their work, SVEP received the Public Engagement Award from the Interdisciplinary Association of Population Health Science.-$9,312
