Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of path vaccine solutions (pvs) is to improve the health of children in low-income countries by accelerating the development of vaccines that will be effective and affordable for those who need them most. From initial discovery through clinical trials, pvs works with commercial partners, such as vaccine manufacturers and biotechnology firms, and nonprofit partners, such as universities and research institutions, to shorten the timeline for vaccine development.pvs works with partners to develop new vaccines by providing funding and expertise in preclinical development, manufacturing, and clinical development, with a focus on low-resource countries. In return, partners agree to terms that help ensure the resulting products are affordable and available in developing countries.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The form 990 was prepared by an outside accounting firm (gelman, rosenberg & freedman) using information provided by path accounting services staff. Path senior management reviewed the draft form. A copy of the draft was sent to path's board of directors for comment. After the comment period, the chief financial officer signed and filed the return.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Pvs has policies and procedures to address conflicts of interest. Path management and all staff above a designated level in the organization must complete a conflict of interest disclosure form each year. All forms are reviewed and kept on file. A conflict management plan is developed for any employee with a significant actual or perceived conflict of interest. Path also has a well-defined procedure for identifying and reporting actual and potential conflicts of interest among board members. New board members are asked to complete a conflict of interest disclosure form within 30 days of joining the board and to complete a new form annually thereafter. In addition, members are reminded to report any new issues that arise outside of the annual disclosure period. The disclosure forms are reviewed by path's general counsel, and, if any actual or potential conflicts are identified, general counsel makes a recommendation to the chair of the governance committee and the chair of the board for a management plan to properly manage any conflicts. A formal management plan is then agreed upon with the board member, and the entire board of directors is informed at the next regularly scheduled board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Pvs's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available to the public upon request; most documents are also available online.

IRS990/Desc0PVS WORKS TO PREVENT DEATH AND DISEASE CAUSED BY DIARRHEA, PNEUMONIA, INFLUENZA, RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS, AND POLIO AMONG CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. WE ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SAFE, EFFICACIOUS, AND AFFORDABLE VACCINES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE GROUPS. IN 2015, PVS CONTINUED OUR FIGHT AGAINST DIARRHEAL DISEASE, THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG CHILDREN IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD. TO COMBAT ROTAVIRUS, A MAJOR CAUSE OF SEVERE DIARRHEA, WE PARTNERED WITH SERUM INSTITUTE OF INDIA PVT. LTD. (SIIPL) TO STUDY A VACCINE THAT MAY REMAIN STABLE AND POTENT EVEN DURING EXTENDED PERIODS WITHOUT REFRIGERATION, ENABLING WIDER USE IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES. WE COMPLETED ENROLLMENT FOR A PHASE 3 EFFICACY STUDY OF THE VACCINE (THE LARGEST EVER UNDERTAKEN AMONG CHILDREN IN INDIA) AND BEGAN A STUDY TO EXAMINE CLINICAL LOT CONSISTENCY AND POTENTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH OTHER ROUTINE VACCINES. FINALLY, ROTAVAC , AN INDIAN-MADE VACCINE DEVELOPED WITH PATH SUPPORT, REMAINED ON TRACK FOR INTRODUCTION IN INDIA'S PUBLIC SECTOR IN 2016.OUR EFFORTS TO COMBAT ENTEROTOXIGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI (ETEC) AND SHIGELLA, IMPORTANT CAUSES OF BACTERIAL DIARRHEAL ILLNESS, HAVE RESULTED IN THE INITIATION AND CONTINUATION OF NUMEROUS CLINICAL TRIALS. IN 2015, WE BEGAN A CLINICAL STUDY OF ETVAX, AN INACTIVATED, WHOLE CELL VACCINE CANDIDATE AGAINST ETEC, AT ICDDR,B IN BANGLADESH. WE ALSO WORKED WITH THE US NAVAL MEDICAL RESEARCH CENTER TO EVALUATE THE PROTECTIVE EFFICACY OF AN ETEC VACCINE CANDIDATE. THE EVALUATION IDENTIFIED POSITIVE TRENDS IN PROTECTION. TO PROTECT AGAINST SHIGELLA, WE PARTNERED WITH THE WALTER REED ARMY INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH TO STUDY A LIVE ATTENUATED VACCINE CANDIDATE IN CHILDREN FIVE TO NINE YEARS OF AGE. RESULTS REVEALED THE VACCINE TO BE SAFE AND IMMUNOGENIC. OUR WORK TO ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW-COST, PEDIATRIC VACCINE CANDIDATES AGAINST THE PNEUMOCOCCUS BACTERIUM-THE TOP CAUSE OF SEVERE CHILDHOOD PNEUMONIA-PROGRESSED IN 2015 WITH THE CONTINUATION OF PHASE 1 AND 2 TRIALS IN AFRICA. IN THE GAMBIA, WE ARE EVALUATING A DECAVALENT PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE (PCV-10) CANDIDATE, MANUFACTURED BY SIIPL. THE PCV-10 CANDIDATE IS DESIGNED TO BE AFFORDABLE AND FOCUSES ON THE TEN SEROTYPES CAUSING THE MOST CASES OF INVASIVE PNEUMOCOCCAL DISEASE IN AFRICA AND ASIA, WHERE MOST PNEUMOCOCCAL DEATHS OCCUR. IN KENYA, WE ARE STUDYING A PNEUMOCOCCAL WHOLE CELL VACCINE CANDIDATE DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE BROAD PROTECTION ACROSS THE MANY SEROTYPES OF PNEUMOCOCCUS AT A LOW PRICE. BOTH VACCINE CANDIDATES ARE DESIGNED TO MEET COST AND DISEASE COVERAGE NEEDS IN LOW-RESOURCE SETTINGS AND COULD HELP FREE UP DONOR FUNDS FOR OTHER GLOBAL HEALTH PRIORITIES IF SUCCESSFUL.
