The mission of path vaccine solutions (pvs) is to improve the health of children in low-income countries by accelerating the development of vaccines that will be effective and affordable for those who need them most. From initial discovery through clinical trials, pvs works with commercial partners, such as vaccine manufacturers and biotechnology firms, and nonprofit partners, such as universities and research institutions, to shorten the timeline for vaccine development.pvs works with partners to develop new vaccines by providing funding and expertise in preclinical development, manufacturing, and clinical development, with a focus on low-resource countries. In return, partners agree to terms that help ensure the resulting products are affordable and available in developing countries.

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | PVS WORKS TO PREVENT DEATH AND DISEASE CAUSED BY DIARRHEA, PNEUMONIA, INFLUENZA, RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS, AND POLIO AMONG CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. WE ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF SAFE, EFFICACIOUS, AND AFFORDABLE VACCINES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE GROUPS. IN 2016, PVS CONTINUED OUR FIGHT AGAINST DIARRHEAL DISEASES, THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME COUNTRIES. TO COMBAT ROTAVIRUS, A MAJOR CAUSE OF SEVERE DIARRHEA, WE CONTINUED TO PARTNER WITH SIIPL TO STUDY A VACCINE THAT MAY REMAIN STABLE AND POTENT EVEN DURING EXTENDED PERIODS WITHOUT REFRIGERATION, ENABLING WIDER USE IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES. WE CONDUCTED A PHASE 3 EFFICACY STUDY OF THE VACCINE, AS WELL AS A STUDY TO EXAMINE CLINICAL LOT CONSISTENCY AND POTENTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH ROUTINE VACCINES. SIIPL SUBMITTED PRIMARY DATA FROM THE EFFICACY STUDY TO THE INDIAN REGULATORY AUTHORITIES, AND THE VACCINE ACHIEVED LICENSURE IN DECEMBER 2016. IN ADDITION, ROTAVAC, ANOTHER INDIAN-MADE VACCINE DEVELOPED WITH PATH SUPPORT, BEGAN A PHASED ROLLOUT IN INDIA'S NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM IN MARCH 2016. [ROTAVAC IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF BHARAT BIOTECH.]WE ALSO CONTINUED TO CONDUCT EARLY-STAGE CLINICAL TRIALS OF VACCINE CANDIDATES THAT MAY PROVIDE PROTECTION AGAINST ENTEROTOXIGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI (ETEC) AND SHIGELLA, LEADING CAUSES OF BACTERIAL DIARRHEAL ILLNESS. IN ADDITION, WE HOSTED THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL VACCINES AGAINST SHIGELLA AND ETEC (VASE) CONFERENCE JUNE 28 TO 30, 2016, IN WASHINGTON, DC. THE MEETING BROUGHT TOGETHER MORE THAN 250 SCIENTISTS, PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, IMMUNIZATION LEADERS, VACCINE INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES, DONORS, AND OTHER EXPERTS FROM APPROXIMATELY 30 COUNTRIES. THE AGENDA FEATURED 23 ABSTRACT-BASED ORAL PRESENTATIONS AND 32 ABSTRACT-BASED POSTER PRESENTATIONS, AND THE CONFERENCE HELPED MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM FOR SHIGELLA AND ETEC VACCINE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE ENTERIC VACCINE FIELD.WE ALSO ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT OF LOW-COST VACCINE CANDIDATES TO PROTECT CHILDREN AGAINST PNEUMOCOCCAL BACTERIA, THE TOP CAUSE OF SEVERE CHILDHOOD PNEUMONIA. IN THE GAMBIA, FOR INSTANCE, WE EVALUATED A PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE (PCV-10) CANDIDATE DESIGNED TO BE AFFORDABLE AND TO PROVIDE PROTECTION AGAINST THE TEN BACTERIAL SEROTYPES THAT CAUSE THE MOST CASES OF INVASIVE PNEUMOCOCCAL DISEASE IN AFRICA AND ASIA. IN KENYA, WE STUDIED A VACCINE CANDIDATE WITH THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE LOW-COST, BROAD PROTECTION ACROSS MANY SEROTYPES. |
