IRS990/Desc0Like every organization Higher Ed Works operations were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. As the reach of the virus became apparent, the organization scaled back its budgeted expenditures by more than 18% or $151,608 in April 2020. The organization also applied for and received a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan of $35,600, used all of the loan proceeds to meet payroll obligations, and saw the loan forgiven by the US Small Business Administration in late 2020. The organization's weekly digital newsletter reaches nearly 200,000 subscribers, and its followers on social media grew to more than 100,000 in 2020. Higher Ed Works reached 2.5 million people over the course of the year with its messaging about the value of higher education in North Carolina. Higher Ed Works also launched a series on university governance authored by notable thought leaders in higher education in North Carolina and the nation. The coverage included a webinar on principles of good governance that featured a former Chair of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and the President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the agency that accredits all universities in the UNC System. After considerable turnover in university leadership, the series focused on stability, de-politicization of the appointment process, improved diversity on governing boards, independence of leadership and avoiding micromanagement of university campuses. The organization also focused attention on those leadership changes: New presidents for the UNC and NC Community College Systems, as well as new chancellors at Western Carolina University, UNC Charlotte, the UNC School of the Arts and East Carolina University. The organization also focused on a scandal at ECU where two university trustees meddled in a student government election and the subsequent revision of ethics rules for trustees. Higher Ed Works also examined how higher education can be more sensitive to diversity issues: A university chancellor penned an eloquent opinion piece of about how the public demonstrations were not a response to a singular event, but rather to mounting frustrations. An African American professor at a predominantly White institution discussed systemic racism and ways to address it. Through 2020, Higher Ed Works continued its work to emphasize important points about the value of public higher education in North Carolina.
