IRS990/Desc0Higher Ed Works (d/b/a Public Ed Works) content, reach, engagement and financial support expanded dramatically in 2024:The Organization's content expanded to embrace advocacy not just for public higher education, but PreK-12 public education as well.The Organization's direct network newsletter subscribers plus social media followers remains over 300,000.Through its newsletter, advertising and social channels, The Organization reached 5,975,375 people in 2024, versus 3,351,958 in 2023.Those people, in turn, took action 7,527,607 times, versus 2,305,699 times in 2023. (Actions are defined as the number of times viewers engaged with The Organization's content via a click, opening an email, viewing a video, sharing our content or posting a comment.)20 of 21 board members (95%) supported the organization financially in 2024.In our 2024 messaging, The Organization continued to stress:The damage to public schools caused by the General Assemblys dramatic expansion of taxpayer-funded vouchers for private schools with no limit on the income of applicant families.The loss of 10,000 teachers from North Carolina public classrooms in 2023, and the need to dramatically increase teacher pay to improve both recruitment and retention of public school teachersThe Organization's statewide campaign of 170 billboards promoting better teacher pay began in May 2024 and originally was scheduled to last one month. But some of the billboards were still standing 12 months later.Overreach, micromanagement and politicization by UNC System governing boards.The organization will continue to stress those themes in 2025, as well as damage at all levels of public education but especially university research and K-12 teacher training from federal budget cuts.The organization also collaborates and shares content from other education advocacy organizations. Public Ed Works intends to place a renewed emphasis on community colleges, which play an increasingly important role in workforce preparation, particularly with recent job announcements from Amazon, Boom SuperSonic, JetZero and the NC Childrens hospital.Everyone loves their local community college until budget time. And community college instructors in North Carolina are arguably paid even worse than K-12 teachers. With North Carolinas recent return to a No.1 ranking as the best state for business, Public Ed Works also intends to emphasize the vital role of public education in preparing a skilled workforce for the states businesses. The vast majority of our students continue to attend public schools. So public education should not be taken for granted.
