Mission

THE EDUCATIONAL POLICY IMPROVEMENT CENTER (EPIC) SEEKS TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL POLICIES AND PRACTICES in ways that lead to more productive edicational results for all students and particularly for students historically underserved by public schools. EPIC conducts a range of policy-related research studies in support of this goal. Epic's focus is on creating a climate of change that supports dramatically improved college and career readiness for more U.S High school students.

Our mission is to make education work for all students. We see a future where readiness and success are defined by students' engagement, adaptability, and what they can do with their knowledge rather than content mastery and testing alone. We want to be a creative catalyst inspiring, equipping, and linking schools to create this future.

“EPIC has two classes of members: voting and non-voting. Voting members have the power to elect and to remove the members of the Board of Directors of EPIC, to vote on any amendments to the bylaws or articles which would alter the qualification, selection, removal, obligations, rights or powers of the voting members, and to vote on any other matters properly put before them by the Board of Directors. Non-voting members do not have the power to vote on the election of directors or members, or to participate in a binding vote on corporate matters.”

We consult with educators to provide strategies and frameworks that identify opportunities for real and actionable improvements in systems, schools, and classrooms. Our strategic work with educators creates clarity amid the clutter and empowers school communities to strengthen and sustain a culture that can support readiness and educational success for every student.The following illustrate the range of projects undertaken and clients served:Santa Ana Unified High School District - Valley High School: Over the past three years, EPIC has partnered closely with the leadership team, teachers, students, and community members from Valley High School in Santa Ana, California on several strategic goals including clarifying the school's cultural identity, supporting literacy efforts, and creating a wall-to-wall career academy structure. Outcomes of the partnership included a rebranded and revitalized school identity, a robust literacy playbook to promote coherence in literacy practices across the school, and a strategic plan to ensure all Valley students are enrolled in career academics that provide them with the opportunity to develop life readiness skills.Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) - Multi-tiered Systems of Support: EPIC partnered with OCDE in support of scaling Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), a comprehensive framework that aligns academic, behavioral, and social-emotional learning to ensure equitable access and opportunities for all students. Working closely with secondary leadership teams, EPIC provided support to help schools understand the MTSS domains, inventory and map student support resources, and identify priorities for the next school year.Merced Unified High School District: To address low pass rates in high school CTE Capstone courses and assure curricular articulation at local community colleges, EPIC developed over 30 career pathway frameworks in over 15 industry sectors. The Bridge Method was used to align course curriculum to the appropriate framework and up to the Capstone course in each pathway and then horizontally align the Capstone courses with entry-level college courses.The College Board (Advanced Placement Course Audit[APCA]): EPIC continues its significant partnership with the College Board. APCA provided teachers and administrators with clear guidelines on the curricular and resource requirements for Advanced Placement courses and syllabi of any course labeled "AP." EPIC manages APCA's online platform, content experts, syllabus reviewers, and a call center for participating teachers and administrators.The California Education Policy Fund (a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors): EPIC received a two-year grant to advance the project's goals of defining and systematizing college and career readiness (CCR) as the state's K-12 education system goal; promoting educational equity to ensure Deeper Learning for all; establishing comprehensive assessment systems to measure college and career readiness, including implementation of new SBAC assessment; anchoring the multiple state accountability systems with CCCR indicators, and; developing seamless pathways between K-12 and postsecondary systems, using Common Core State Standards and SBAC.International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Acquisition Standards: EPIC serves as a key research partner for the International Baccalaureate Organization. During the past year, EPIC has worked on several research studies for the IB, including one that examined the standards and guidance the IB uses to inform language acquisition courses in IB schools across the globe. EPIC compared IB's standards with other sets of language acquisition standards and provided recommendations on how the IB's standards could be improved to ease teacher interpretation of language acquisition levels and the benchmarks students should achieve in their acquisition of another language.
