“Cabd reclaims black narratives with emotionally raw, historically informed, and thought-provoking repertory on race, culture, and identity, blending modern, hip hop, african, tap, and social dances to forge riveting, visceral works that ripple with energy and urgency. The company is celebrated nationally for its bold movement, powerful theatricality, and virtuosic musicality. Community engagement and education activities are essential to the organization's mission and, at home and on tour, cabd offers masterclasses for pre-professional dancers, post-performance dialogues with audiences, convenings, lectures, and residencies. Through the company's education platform, every body move, cabd provides free social dance movement workshops to nurture and activate the creative potential of those with little access to the arts, as well as fostering confidence, promoting wellness, and building skills to help direct personal growth for at risk youth and young adults in nyc neighborhoods and beyond. Cabd's virtual school offers social dance classes and a social dance lecture series to teach, honor, and elevate historically marginalized black forms of aesthetic expression. Brown's trilogy of 3 evening-long works on race, culture, and identity--mr. Tol e. Rance; black girl: linguistic play ("bg:lp"); ink; and the trilogy repertory program, a specially crafted evening of selections from brown's trilogy--were scheduled to be performed by cabd in 2020, prior to the pandemic. The bessie award-winning mr. Tol e. Rance (2013/2019 revival) is a bitingly humorous look at minstrelsy, black face and "wearing the mask of survival." the bessie-nominated bg:lp (2015) uses the rhythmic play of african american social dancing, double dutch, steppin', juba, and ring shout to lift-up black girls' creativity and innocence. Cristina greer, ph.d., wrote in amsterdam news that bg: lp was "one of the most powerful representations of black girlhood i have ever witnessed. Brown created a moving masterpiece that was a narrative of black adolescence never conceptualized before." ink (2017) elevates the gestural vocabulary of the african diaspora, celebrating black love, brotherhood, community, and resilience, and was heralded in the new york times best dance of 2019 list. Before the pandemic began, cabd performed selections of ink in 2 nyc performances at city center studios, jan. 11-12, 2020, toured the bessie- nominated black girl: linguistic play to uncg auditorium at university of north carolina-greensboro (greensboro, nc) on feb. 8, 2020, and toured its trilogy repertory program to omaha performing arts center at the orpheum theater (omaha, ne), feb. 22, 2020; the moore theater presented by seattle theater group (seattle, wa), march 3, 2020; and 2 performances at the shubert theater-boch center, presented by boston celebrity series (boston, ma), march 6-7, 2020. Cabd gave seven live performances in five states between january and early march 2020. Mid-march through december 2020, all touring performances were canceled or postponed to a later date due to covid-19. In 2020, the organization partnered with thirteen community neighborhood centers, arts organizations, and public schools in nyc to bring free in- person and virtual every body move (ebm) creative and empowering workshops, social dance classes, and convenings to individuals of all ages, with a focus on bipoc youth in harlem and new york city's outer boroughs--the bronx, queens and brooklyn--who lack access to the arts. Cabd provided 129 workshops to nyc and nys residents, mostly adolescent girls; offered professional development for 30 nyc dance educators through the national dance institute; and hosted "the gathering"--a networking and learning event for black and brown female dancemakers and dance artists in nyc (jan 2020).
