Pretty brainy is organized and operates exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Pretty brainy's purpose is to give girls and young women real-world experiences in science, technology, engineering, art + design, and math (steam) through which they may give back to their communities and connect with professionals who inspire. Through these experiences, as well as programs through which girls gain resilience, we empower them to realize a fuller scope of their talents, interests, and opportunities for contributing to their world.

The specific purpose and objectives of Pretty Brainy include, but are not limited to, using design as a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning tool for students, emphasizing girls ages 10-18, to inspire them academically and professionally in schools and nonprofits across the United States.

| Pretty Brainy Design-a-Thon: 24 Hours of InnovationService provided: Piloted in November 2016, the Design-a-Thon gives students ages 10 to 18 the opportunity to engage in 24 hours of learning in real-world processes to address problems facing their community. We provide problem statements, design materials, studio space, mentoring, and lightning lessons in topics that include engineering design, design thinking, collaboration, and empathy. Students have 24 hours in which to think, research, make decisions, and prototype. Through the program they gain experience in engineering design and critical and computational thinking.Number of persons benefitted: Number of students who participated: 45. In addition, approximately 70 parents and educators from neighboring school districts came to observe the students' active learning process and presentations.Other relevant information: Partnering with Pretty Brainy in this program were the educational technology teams of Poudre, Thompson and Weld RE4 School Districts in Colorado. Other contributors included Otter Products and the Loveland (CO) Creator Space. Volunteers skilled in engineering, technology, and social entrepreneurship donated more than 100 hours to help instruct and mentor the young innovators in this program. To make this program a reality for 2016, our chief executive donated her time to structure the program and gathered materials that remained from other, previous programs. Expenses reflected here, therefore, are artificially low. | Textiles + TechStyles: Code. Innovation. Design Thinking.Service provided: Girls ages 11 to 18 experienced the value of learning to write computer code and innovate through engineering design thinking. Students formed an innovation cohort and invented an array of prototypes to address health and wellness dilemmas in their community. Of students in the program, 100% agreed that the program had increased their interest in innovation and design; 84% said the program increased their interest in science and technology and the remaining 16% said their interest in science and tech had been sustained. One hundred percent strongly agreed with the statement, "I like working with the mentors."Number of persons benefitted: Fourteen students and their adult family members benefitted from our winter-spring 2016 pilot. An additional 14 girls from underserved groups participated in fall 2016. Long-term benefits: of the teens in our pilot, one has been offered multiple full-ride scholarships for her service learning through Pretty Brainy, one has formed an LLC to further develop her innovation, and a third will be returning to her middle school to teach the program for the 2017-18 schoolyear. We are making the program broadly available through a written curriculum, thus further increasing the number of girls impacted.Other relevant information: Volunteers skilled in engineering, technology, and entrepreneurship donated more than 300 hours to help instruct and mentor the young innovators in our pilot.
