Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PROGRAM 1- Zero Waste Initiative. We help the Town of Fairfax work towards its zero waste goals, including the following features and events: 1) Zero Waste Film and Panel Discussion. We featured the Clean Bin Project followed by a panel of local and county experts to discuss landfill waste reduction efforts, and educate residents on proper sorting practices. 2) Fairfax Take Back Day. This event provides residents with a one-stop-shop to recycle e-waste, shred sensitive documents and safely dispose of unused prescription drugs. 4,921 pounds of e-waste were removed from the waste steam and 2.09 tons of paper were shredded free of cost to Fairfax residents. The Fairfax police collected 116 pounds of pharmaceuticals. The event is held in coordination with Marin Sanitary Service and the Town of Fairfax. 3) Bring it Home Compost program. We coordinated a program which delivers back compost free of charge to the residents of Fairfax made from the processed yard and food waste collected from the residential green curbside carts 4) Compost Workshops. We coordinated two free backyard compost workshops, featuring an instructor from Marin Master Gardeners. (43 people) 5) A presentation on zero waste at a Marin event called "What We Must Do," co-sponsored by sustainability-focused nonprofits. 6) Face-to-Face Zero Waste. We tabled downtown with our interns to educate the community on proper waste sorting, highlighting the importance of keeping food waste out of the landfill. 7) Our high school zero waste interns published three blogs on zero waste topics. 8) Outreach via our Fairfax Zero Waste Facebook page, website and newsletter has reached over 4000 people. 9) We coordinated resource recovery collection at Town events to reduce the amount of landfill waste.$0$8,141
PROGRAM 2: Community Education Program. Our community education program consists of the following focuses: 1) Water Conservation. We held two workshops (55 participants) including a Laundry to Landscape workshop to teach people how to install their own greywater system, and a Rainwater catchment workshop that taught participants how to install two different types of rainwater catchment systems. 2) Low-Carbon Transportation - ReduceX2. The purpose of this program is to inspire people to make fewer car trips, thereby reducing traffic and greenhouse gases. The program features: --our guided walks called "Fairfax on Foot" familiarize residents with the walking paths and historical easements in the Fairfax area (we led six of these walks in 2016/2017); --our guided bike rides called "Slow Riders" to familiarize people with the safest and most scenic bike routes to frequently visited places in Marin (we led three of these rides in 2015/2016) --an educational alternative transportation section at the Streets for People event, which provided a Golden Gate Transit bus for people to practice loading and unloading their bikes, information about the ReduceX2 program, and tabling from local transportation related organizations; --a Transportation Resources page on our website; --alternative transportation news and features on our social media platforms. 3) Sustainable Fairfax Film & Speaker series. This popular series combines films, speakers and action items that bring the community together for education and dynamic discussions. Films focus on global and regional climate crisis topics. Our speakers are filmmakers, academics, activists and leaders in their fields. We promote concrete action items that empower the public to become advocates for climate change. We also address issues that underscore ways our community can make a difference at home, in our neighborhoods and globally. This year we held four film and speaker evenings attended by 184 people. 3) Seeds and Gardening. We partner with the Fairfax Library to manage a free Community Seed Exchange. We hosted a seed saving workshop and exchange with the library to highlight the importance of seed diversity and sharing. We also sponsored an event hosted by the Backyard Farmer featuring speakers on urban farming, bees, and gardening/climate change.$0$3,817
PROGRAM 3. Special Events. We coordinate two large community events either year: --Streets for People. This event opens up several car-free blocks of downtown Fairfax to the community for a Sunday afternoon. The event was attended by nearly 1,000 people. Businesses, local nonprofits and residents participate to bring creativity and community to the street. We promote zero waste and car-free transportation at this event. --Fairfax Craft Faire. Every year we partner with Fairfax Recreation to bring this favorite holiday event to the community. It highlights local artisans and crafts people with offerings/gifts made from sustainable materials. At this event we promote purchasing plastic-free products and reducing wasteful packaging. The event is attended by approximately 1,000 people.$0$1,025
