Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Educate the public on sustainability. Advocate for local and global sustainability measures.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Zero Waste Program. Sustainable Fairfax works with the Town of Fairfax on implementing the Town's plan to reach 94% waste diversion from landfill by 2020. We worked with Marin Sanitary Service on our annual Take Back Day event, providing e-waste recycling and paper shredding services as well as hazardous waste collection. We work at all the Townwide events to ensure as close to zero waste outcomes as possible. Through our presence at these events over the past year we have reached over 5000 people through our zero waste signage and educational displays and activities. Outreach via our Fairfax Zero Waste by 2020 Facebook page, website, newsletter and brochures has reached over 4000 people. We also coordinate a program which delivers back compost free of charge to the residents of Fairfax made from the processed yard and food waste collected in our green curbside carts. We ran several programs to educate residents on appropriate recycling and composting practices, including a door-to-door campaign in the multi-family housing buildings, and tabling by our high school intern in downtown Fairfax, providing us with the opportunity to connect and engage with community members as they walked by. We researched, identified and advocated for new public recycling receptacles to improve recycling collection in downtown Fairfax.$0$16,235
Community Education Program. Hosted a bimonthly environmental film & lecture series. Conducted two beekeeping workshops and two composting workshops. Organized a panel discussion on water conservation issues. Held six Community Council events which connected people around various sustainability topics. Sponsored the following lectures: a talk on seed saving in collaboration with the Marin County Free Library; five lectures on climate change as part of the Green Chautauqua Lecture Series hosted by the First Presbyterian Church; and two lectures on the State of the Coho Salmon. The educational information provided on the Sustainable Fairfax Bulletin board at Good Earth Natural Foods reaches hundreds of people each week. Our newsletter is distributed to over 1,300 members each month, our website reaches over 1,000 per month. We have 595 members on our Facebook group site and our Zero Waste Facebook page reaches hundreds monthly.$0$9,178
Special Events -We organized and hosted several large events for the benefit of the community 1) Streets for People - Co-hosted the third Streets for People event with the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce. Streets were closed to vehicles and over 1,000 community members united together. 2) Fairfax Craft Faire - Co-hosted the Fairfax Craft Faire with Fairfax FOCAS where local artisans sold ecologically sound crafts.$0$7,619
Tranportation Program- Reduce by Two. The County of Marin provided Sustainable Fairfax a $15,000 grant for our new ReduceX2 alternative transportation program. The purpose of this program is to reduce traffic and reduce greenhouse gases by reducing the number of car trips made by our community members. We are creating systems and developing resources that incentivize walking, biking, busing and carpooling. In fiscal year 2014/2015, we began the development stages of the program. We held a Focus group to obtain feedback from the community on their transportation habits. We began a series of guided walks from Town to familiarize residents with the walking paths and historical easements. And, we led a bicycle ride to the Ferry building to educate people on the safest route. The funding for this came at the end of our Fiscal year, most of the project and expenses will be in 2015-2016 year$0$2,610
