DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PROGRAM 1- Zero Waste Initiative. We help the Town of Fairfax work towards its zero waste goals, including the following features and events: 1) Fairfax Take Back Day- April 27, 2019. This event provides residents with a one-stop-shop to recycle e-waste, shred sensitive documents and safely dispose of unused prescription drugs. We collected 5,232 pounds of e-waste for recycling and 4,400 pounds of paper, shredded free of charge to Fairfax residents. The Fairfax police collected 153 pounds of pharmaceuticals. This year we added a used mattress collection through the Mattress Recycling Council program. The event is held in collaboration with Marin Sanitary Service and the Town of Fairfax. 2) We coordinate the Town's Bring it Home Compost program. This program provides Fairfax residents free compost made from the processed yard and food waste collected from the residential green curbside carts. 3) Face-to-Face Zero Waste. We tabled with our interns at events to educate the community on proper waste sorting, highlighting the importance of keeping food waste out of the landfill. 5) Outreach via our Fairfax Zero Waste Facebook page, website and newsletter has reached over 40,000 people. 6) We coordinated resource recovery collection at Town events to reduce the amount of landfill waste. This year 2.57 tons of recyclables and compost were diverted from the landfill at the Fairfax Festival. 7) We ran a "No Waste November" campaign which included: a) a tour of the Redwood Landfill Compost Facility; b) four Sustainable Shopping Tours at Good Earth Natural Foods; c) a tour of the Marin Recycling Center; d) a backyard compost workshop and e) a No Waste November Challenge. Sustainable Fairfax designed this challenge to encourage people to set a personal goal to reduce landfill waste for the month.$0$933
PROGRAM 2: Community Education Program. Our community education program consists of the following focuses: 1) Low-Carbon Transportation - ReduceX2. The purpose of this program is to inspire people to make fewer car trips, thereby reducing traffic and greenhouse gases. The program features: a) our guided bike rides called "Slow Riders" to familiarize people with the safest and most scenic bike routes to frequently visited places in Marin (we led three of these rides in 2018/19) b) a Transportation Resources page on our website; 2) Sustainable Fairfax Film & Speaker series. This popular series combines films, speakers and action items that bring the community together for education and dynamic discussions. Films focus on global and regional climate crisis topics. Our speakers are filmmakers, academics, activists and leaders in their fields. We promote concrete action items that empower the public to become advocates for climate change. We also address issues that underscore ways our community can make a difference at home, in our neighborhoods and globally. This fiscal year we held three film and speaker evenings. 3) Seeds and Gardening. We partnered with the Fairfax Library to manage a free Community Seed Exchange and hosted a talk on Seed Saving in October 2018 4) We partnered with 350Marin to host four Community Conversations on Climate Action at the Fairfax library; 4) Event sponsorships: We sponsored two Global Climate Action Summit Affiliate events in August 2018 and a West African Cultural Workshop in October 2018.$0$860
PROGRAM 3. Special Events. We coordinate two large community events either year: a) Streets for People. This event opens up several car-free blocks of downtown Fairfax to the community for a Sunday afternoon. The event was attended by nearly 1,000 people. Businesses, local nonprofits and residents participate to bring creativity and community to the street. We promote zero waste and car-free transportation at this event. b) Fairfax Craft Faire. Every year we partner with Fairfax Recreation to bring this favorite holiday event to the community. It highlights local artisans and crafts people with offerings/gifts made from sustainable materials. At this event we promote purchasing plastic-free products and reducing wasteful packaging. The event is attended by approximately 1,000 people.$0$20
