Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The organization's process for overseeing the audit or review of the financial statements and the selection of an independent accountant has not changed from prior years.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization does not believe it has unrelated business income to be reported for tax purposes. In addition, the organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken to date and, therefore, has no related income tax due for all years where the statute of limitations remains open, which is generally three years for federal filings and four years for california filings.

IN 2015-16 THE YES PROGRAM SUPPORTED 241 YOUTH WITH CASE MANAGEMENT AND EDUCATION COACHING. 150 OF THOSE 241 STUDENTS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT AS WELL. AS PART OF THE YES PROGRAM, SVCF LAUNCHED A NEW COMMUNITY COLLEGE RETENTION INITIATIVE CALLED RISE (RELATIONSHIP INSPIRING SCHOLAR EXCELLENCE). RISE WAS DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY TO ADDRESS THE LOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE RETENTION RATE OF STUDENTS IN FOSTER CARE. (SEE SCHEDULE O)HIGHER EDUCATION PATHWAYS (CONTINUED): APPROXIMATELY 90% OF OUR SCHOLARS START THEIR HIGHER EDUCATION CAREER AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. RISE IS CURRENTLY OPERATING ON FIVE PARTNER COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAMPUSES IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY SUPPORTING NOT ONLY OUR YES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS, BUT ALL FOSTER YOUTH ON THOSE CAMPUSES. RISE COACHES, WHO MEET WITH THEIR STUDENTS BI-WEEKLY, HELP SCHOLARS DEFINE ACADEMIC GOALS, DEVELOP CRITICAL STUDENT SUCCESS SKILLS, AND CONNECT SCHOLARS TO IMPORTANT ADJUNCT SERVICES INCLUDING FINANCIAL AID AND TUTORING. YES SCHOLARS ARE 10X MORE LIKELY TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE, COMPARED TO THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF ONLY 3%. 95% OF OUR SCHOLARS WHO ENGAGED IN CONSISTENT TUTORING MET OR EXCEEDED SCHOLARSHIP ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS.
