Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

The organization works with foster youth starting as early as 9th grade, while they navigate the critical years from high school to college and into the workforce. By combining the organization's educational coaching and college scholarships with employment opportunities, the organization helps foster youth become self-reliant when they emancipate from the foster care system. The organization's comprehensive services include 1:1 trauma-competent academic and employment coaching, tutoring, professional development training, college scholarships, and paid summer internships. In addition to offering direct services, the organization also leads collaborative efforts with the entire ecosystem of people who serve the community's foster youth and is building a strategic movement to rewrite what it means to be impacted by the foster care system.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The organization's process for overseeing the audit or review of the financial statements and the selection of an independent accountant has not changed from prior years.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The organization has a policy of appropriating for distribution each year up to 5% of the fair value of the endowment assets. In addition, the organization's board of directors have committed to investing up to $3m of the endowment to support the organization's three-year growth strategy. $1m of the $3m was transferred to operations in fiscal year 2019.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization does not believe it has unrelated business income to be reported for tax purposes. In addition, the organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken to date and, therefore, has no related income tax due for all years where the statute of limitations remains open, which is generally three years for federal filings and four years for california filings.
