Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Confluence is a community-supported nonprofit that connects people to the history, indigenous cultures and ecology of the columbia river system. We work through art, education and public gatherings in collaboration with tribes, communities and artist maya lin.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Gifts from our ancestors (goa) is a two-year program led by the confluence project, local artists and educators to engage over 3,000 tribal and non- tribal students through multiple forms of artistic, musical and oral expression practiced by native americans along the columbia river for generations. Central to this engagement is celilo falls. In the northwest, there are few places more powerful than where celilo falls thundered into the columbia. The mighty wy'am ("echo of falling water") offered life-sustaining salmon and was the seat of commerce and cultural exchange for thousands of native americans for over 10,000 years. By engaging students, teachers and their communities in this rich history, goa will help to ensure the continued educational, cultural and ecological stewardship of the columbia river and its tributaries. In congress with maya lin's tribute walkway at celilo park, restoration of the park, an interpretive pavilion, and educational website, the artwork created by these students will join the story of celilo. This program is the model for future learning opportunities for the confluence project.

CONFLUENCE PROJECT IS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST TRIBES, RENOWNED ARTIST MAYA LIN, CIVIC GROUPS FROM WASHINGTON AND OREGON AND OTHER ARTISTS, ARCHITECTS AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS. THE PROJECT STRETCHES MORE THAN 300 MILES FROM WHERE THE COLUMBIA RIVER FLOWS INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN TO CLARKSTON, WASHINGTON, WITH SITES IN BOTH OREGON AND WASHINGTON. EACH OF ITS SEVEN SITES FEATURES AN ART INSTALLATION BY MS. LIN THAT INTERPRETS THE AREA'S ECOLOGY AND HISTORY, ENCOURAGING THE VISITOR TO REFLECT ON HOW THE SURROUNDINGS HAVE CHANGED OVER TIME.
