ADULT EDUCATION Since 1982, Wilkinson Center has been providing quality education to the people of east Dallas. We share a common goal of independence, self-sufficiency and self-worth with our clients. By becoming employed and independent of social services, our students discover their own dignity and make their own special contributions to a healthy, prosperous community.Our Adult Education program, which serve more than 1,200 individuals each year, help people learn the skills they need for life.Classes are offered at minimal or no cost to students, and are taught separately in English and Spanish. Our current classes include:Pre-General Educational Development (Pre-GED)General Educational Development (GED)English as a Second Language (ESL)CareerWorks (Job readiness)Financial LiteracyComputer LiteracyProgram highlights for 2011:1. 937 enrollments in Adult Education classes (GED, ESL, Pre-GED, Computer Literacy, Career Works).2. 68% of Career Works graduates advanced in their employment or continued towards higher education.

Activity 3

FOOD ASSISSTANCE and EMERGENCY SERVICESThe Wilkinson Center Food Assistance Program provides one weeks supply of food, translating into more than 40,000 pounds of emergency food, to hungry Dallas families every month. We serve individuals of all ages. Approximately one-half of our food pantry clients are children. With respect to every persons time, we have worked to develop a system that allows a registered client to complete their food assistance visit within 11 minutes. Our client-choice shopping model allows clients to choose their food according to their needs and preferences, eliminating waste and increasing self-esteem. Our shelves and coolers are arranged like a grocery store and clients normally have several choices for their cart from each of the food categories outlined by the USDA.For most clients, this is the first point of contact with Wilkinson Center. The food pantry offers several full time case managers who counsel and build a plan of action with every client served. Case managers also conduct follow up appointments in the afternoon and track client progress. In addition to food assistance, Wilkinson Center has limited funds available for emergency needs such as housing and utility situations. Our case managers are trained to make referrals to partner services and utilize all of the tools available so that families can begin to use our independence-enhancing adult education and childrens services programs.Program highlights for 2011:1. 507,780 pounds of food distributed through our food pantry and children's programs.
