Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The concilio began as dallas concilio of hispanic service organizations and in 2010 changed its name to the concilio. Founded in 1981 to fill the role of collaborative partner in response to the needs of an emerging hispanic population, the concilio educated nonprofits and other agencies on effectively reaching this growing demographic. For 39 years, the concilio has specialized in outreach to the hispanic community, as well as actively working with other effective, existing local agencies. Today the concilio provides direct services that fulfill its mission "to build stronger communities by empowering parents to improve the education and health of their families."

The mission of The Concilio is to build stronger communities by empowering parents to improve the education and health of their families. The Concilio provides parents with direct health and education services primarily through group classes in order to unlock the potential of their children.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

ETI- Emerging Teacher Institute: In partnership with the University of North Texas at Dallas, the ETI initiative is focused on engaging and partnering with the community, with a focus on parents, schools, and community colleges, to identify and attract qualified students to apply to and enroll in UNTDs Emerging Teacher Institute.Early Escalera: Unidos US program, Early Escalera, seeks to improve educational and career outcomes for students by increasing high school graduation rates, postsecondary enrollment and completion rates, and advancement into careers with opportunities for upward mobility. The program focuses on 9th and 10th grade students to begin an early pipeline of leadership development, self-awareness, and college and career readiness. The program provides students with opportunities, resources, and support they may not otherwise receive by implementing its personal development and college and career readiness curriculum with a national network of community-based organizations and charter schools. Escalera STEM: Unidos US program, Escalera STEM, supports at-risk, economically disadvantaged minority high school students by helping youth graduate from high school, prepare for college, and make informed plans for their careers with emphasis in STEM fields, an area that has significant employment opportunities, but minorities are largely underrepresented. The program introduces and exposes youth to these fields by connecting students to real STEM professional mentors and workplaces to offer opportunities for internships, career summits, career shadowing, and a broader resource network.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services

CASA- Cultura, Aprendizaje, Servicio, Accin: Unidos US service-learning program called CASA works to develop culturally aware youth leaders grades 6th 8th who serve as agents of change to address issues that impact their communities. Through active engagement, students develop complex critical thinking and reflective skills while gaining high levels of academic learning. Since CASA is a yearlong program, the funding that Unidos US provided was not sufficient to continue sustaining the program. The Concilios Community Engagement Department oversees a community action network (CAN). CAN was developed to help build a whole community where families take ownership as the leaders and decision makers. CAN has established a unique model in which the parent leaders of the program, all low-income mothers, are seated at the decision-making table and have been fully integrated into all levels of development, planning, and implementation of each project and activity. Equipping and supporting mothers to be leaders in their neighborhoods, to be civically engaged and to build a sense of community is the best way to create whole communities that collectively support school readiness for the long term. The intention of this program was for The Concilio to form it and then to hand it over to our Bachman Lake Together partners where it is still operational and successful.

Form 990, Part I, Line 5 - Number of Individuals Employed in 2016

The concilio does not file a w-3 directly as it uses a peo for employment and payroll functions. During 2017 the concilio had 74 individuals employed under the peo arrangment. All compensation information disclosed in part vii of the 990 was paid by the peo and filed under its combined w-3.

The organiation did not have a material unrealted business income tax liability as of december 31, 2017. Therefore, no tax provision or liability has been reported.gaap requires the evaluation of tax positions taken in the course of preparing the organization's tax return and recognition of a tax liability (or asset) if the organization has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by the internal revenue service. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the organization and has concluded that as of decemeber 31, 2017, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability (or asset) or disclosure in the financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0The Concilios Parents Advocating for Student Excellence (PASE) Program teaches parents how to take a participatory role in the academic success of their children, identify academic challenges their children may face, create a home environment supportive of learning and healthy communication and set high academic expectations for their children including goals for higher education. The program spans the education spectrum by working with parents with children from kindergarten through 12th grade. By targeting parents, we are leveraging their influence to impact high school graduation rates and college attendance. The results of our PASE Program are amazing. Over 90% of the children whose parents completed PASE graduated from high school compared to 83% of their peers. 78% of those parents children who graduated high school pursued post-secondary education compared to 62% of their peers.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Concilios HealthY Kids Healthy Families (HKHF) Program aims to prevent and decrease obesity in low-income, primarily Hispanic families by encouraging the adoption of healthy behaviors such as physical activity, improved nutrition, and positive peer/parental role modeling.Over 50% of the children in our HKHF Program increased the number of days they are physically active by at least 1 day between the beginning of the program and end of the program. Over 60% of parents who had pre and post BMI assessments decreased their unhealthy BMI or maintained a healthy BMI during our program.
