Research Services Published research reports and analysis finding that increased downpayment standards would exclude creditworthy borrowers from homeownership while preventing few defaults, showing that losses on credit cards in the current downturn rose faster at banks using unfair, deceptive practices, describing the prevalence of yo-yo scams in the auto lending market, highlighting the spillover cost of foreclosures for neighborhoods, and outlining the nature of abusive lending in the U.S. marketplace more generally.

Activity 3

Outreach/Communications Raised visibility of abusive mortgage lending, high level of foreclosures, checking account abuses, and small loan predatory lending issues among national, statewide, and local groups, e.g. civil rights, faith-based, and other grassroots organizations. Helped predatory lending victims address complaints. Presented at approximately 120 workshops and conferences, educating thousands of individuals about abusive financial services. Communications efforts resulted in thousands of citations by the media covering financial abuses that impact borrowers and mentioning CRLs research and policy work.
