Research Services Published research reports and analysis finding that banks are making payday loans to customers, stripping funds from their checking accounts in a cycle of debt near 400 annual interest showing that the U.S. is not even halfway through the foreclosure crisis and describing the scope of the foreclosure crisis including impact on specific geographies, racial, and ethnic demographics exploring the effects of new opt-in rules for overdraft programs on checking accounts and revealing abusive marketing tactics associated with the programs continuing to demonstrate the successful impact of the CARD Act reforms and showing that loan modifications return more value to investors than foreclosures.

Activity 3

Outreach/Communications Raised visibility of abusive mortgage lending, high level of foreclosures, checking account abuses, and small loan predatory lending issues among national, statewide, and local groups, e.g. civil rights, faith-based, and other grassroots organizations. Helped predatory lending victims address complaints. Presented at approximately 120 workshops and conferences, educating thousands of individuals about abusive financial services. Communications efforts resulted in thousands of citations by the media covering financial abuses that impact borrowers and mentioning CRLs research and policy work.
