Mission and Program Overview

Mission

When a child's parent dies, there are usually many adults who want to help that child. But they don't know how. Children and teenagers who are grieving often don't know what they need, either. Forget about asking for that help. Their lives have been turned upside down, and, at the same time, so have their feelings and thoughts. That's where gerard's house comes in. We know how to help. In fact, whether a parent or other loved one has died, disappeared, been incarcerated, deported or separated by borders, we are here for kids, teenagers and their families. Our core service of peer grief support groups for youth ages 3-21 is stronger than ever, now expanded with new programs like nuestra jornada and the semicolon group. The 4 weekly groups gerard's house offered in 1997 have now grown to 20 weekly grief support groups for youth and 5 weekly grief support groups for adults.

Serving northern new mexico since 1997, gerard's house provides a safe place for grieving children, teens and families, where healing happens through acceptance and peer support.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0NUESTRA JORNADA: IN RECENT YEARS, A KEY PLANNING PRIORITY HAS BEEN TO REMOVE BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION FOR SANTA FE'S MOST VULNERABLE AND TRAUMATIZED CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS SO THAT THEY CAN RECEIVE NURTURING, CARE AND REAL HELP AS THEY GRAPPLE WITH UNIMAGINABLE LOSSES. ONE OF THE WAYS WE ARE ACCOMPLISHING THIS IS THROUGH NUESTRA JORNADA, ("OUR JOURNEY") A GROUNDBREAKING PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM ADDRESSING GRIEF AND LOSS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS WHOSE FAMILIES HAVE COME FROM MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA. LAUNCHED IN THE FALL OF 2015 WITH 4 WEEKLY GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS, NUESTRA JORNADA EXPANDED TO 10 WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUPS IN 2016., NUESTRA JORNADA'S PROGRAM GOAL IS THAT CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS FIND HEALING THROUGH ACCEPTANCE AND PEER SUPPORT AFTER A LOVED ONE HAS DIED BY HOMICIDE, SUICIDE, ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS, OR WHEN FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN DEPORTED, INCARCERATED, KIDNAPPED, HAVE DISAPPEARED OR ARE SEPARATED BY BORDERS. WE HAVE SEEN THE DEEP IMPACT THIS ONGOING, WEEKLY PEER SUPPORT HAS HAD ON THE NUESTRA JORNADA PARTICIPANTS WHO ARE FROM THE SPANISH-SPEAKING IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY. MOST OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE NOT ONLY EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE LOSSES BUT TRAUMATIC, VIOLENT EVENTS IN THEIR YOUNG LIVES AS WELL. IN A DECEMBER 2016 SURVEY, NUESTRA JORNADA PARTICIPANTS WERE ASKED, "HOW MUCH HAS THIS GROUP HELPED YOU ALTOGETHER, OVERALL?" ON A SCALE OF 1-10, THE AVERAGE RESPONSE OF 119 PARTICIPANTS SURVEYED WAS 8.8. EVALUATION RESULTS: YOUTH PARTICIPANTS IN WEEKLY GRIEF CONNECTIONS GROUPS AT GERARD'S HOUSE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE DEATH OF A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND. HERE IS A SAMPLE OF THE EVALUATION RESULTS OF YOUTH AGES 7-21 WHO COMPLETED THE ANONYMOUSLY ADMINISTERED POST-SURVEY IN DECEMBER 2016. SINCE COMING TO GROUPS AT GERARD'S HOUSE:" 72% SAID THEY UNDERSTAND THEIR FEELINGS BETTER" 76% SAID THEY FEEL MORE HOPE" 80% SAID THEY DON'T FEEL AS ALONE" 84% SAID THEY HAVE LEARNED THINGS ABOUT GRIEF THAT HAVE HELPED THEM" 88% SAID THAT BEING IN THE GROUPS REMINDS THEM THAT GRIEF IS NORMAL AND THAT OTHERS ARE GOING THROUGH IT, TOO" 88% SAID THE GROUPS ARE FUN" 96% SAID THAT OVERALL, THE GROUPS HAVE HELPED THEM WITH THE DEATH AND WITH THEIR GRIEF
