Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 2, Part V, Line 4

The foundation's endowment funds include both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the board of trustees to function as endowments and are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions. The foundation has adopted investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding to programs supported by its endowment while seeking to provide growth of these funds. Endowment assets include those assets of donor-restricted funds that the foundation must hold in perpetuity or for a donor-specified period as well as board-designated funds. The foundation has a policy of appropriating for distribution each year 4.5% of the average annual endowment fund value over the preceding three years, in addition to appropriations for investment expense. The board decides each year that the percentage is prudent based on economic conditions and may decide to adjust the distribution to a lesser amount. In establishing this policy, the foundation considered the long-term expected return on its endowment. Accordingly, over the long term, the foundation expects the current spending policy to allow its endowment to grow over time.
