Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The president and ceo, along with designated senior staff, review the form 990 before it is signed and filed. Any questions related to its contents are resolved before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All possible conflicts of interest of directors, officers and key employees are brought to the attention of the ceo to explore and report to the board if the conflict merits further investigation or action.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Compensation process for top officials: the board sets the president and ceo's compensation and is guided by periodic sector-wide compensation studies which reflect industry norms and standards. Compensation process for officers or key employees: the board's compensation committee makes recommendations regarding compensation levels for board members and officers in consultation with the president and ceo. Those recommendations are then reviewed, amended as needed, and then adopted by the board. Compensation for key employees is set by the president and ceo in keeping with industry standards for the sector in general and think tanks in particular. The process was last undertaken in august 2017.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/ExpenseAmt0990067
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0HUMAN RIGHTS, SERVICES AND JUSTICE - THE INSTITUTE UNDERTAKES MULTIPLE PROJECTS IN THE AREAS OF HUMAN RIGHTS, SERVICES, AND JUSTICE. RESEARCHERS STUDY HOW NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS CAN HELP THE PUBLIC UNDERSTAND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE NEED TO REFORM IT IN THE U.S. AND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. THE INSTITUTE ALSO CONTINUED TO TEACH ADVOCATES HOW TO USE THE RESEARCH FROM A PROJECT TO REFRAME JUVENILE JUSTICE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ANNIE E. THE INSTITUTE ALSO EXPLORED HOW ADVOCATES IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, CAN MOBILIZE THEIR COMMUNITY AROUND IMPROVING OUTCOMES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt0338407
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0ECONOMY AND EQUALITY - AS INCOME INEQUALITY CONTINUES TO RISE, PEOPLE ARE PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO ITS EFFECTS ON OUR COUNTRY'S SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND POLITICAL SYSTEMS. DISCUSSIONS ABOUT WAYS TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY, REDUCE INEQUITY, AND PROMOTE ECONOMIC MOBILITY ARE PERMEATING POLICY CIRCLES, THE MEDIA, AND SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS. FUNDING FROM THE JAMES S. AND JOHN L. KNIGHT FOUNDATION SUPPORTS FRAMEWORKS RESEARCH IN THIS AREA.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1EDUCATION - RECOGNIZING THE CHALLENGE THAT NONPROFIT AND PUBLIC-SECTOR LEADERS FACE IN ENGAGING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IN MEANINGFUL EDUCATION REFORMS, AN INFLUENTIAL GROUP OF PHILANTHROPIC LEADERS CAME TOGETHER TO PARTNER WITH THE INSTITUTE IN DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE NEW WAYS OF TALKING ABOUT THIS CRITICAL ISSUE: A NEW CORE STORY OF EDUCATION. FRAMEWORKS OFFERS WORKSHOPS AND ON-LINE COURSES TO HELP ADVOCATES USE THIS RESEARCH.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2AGING - EIGHT OF THE NATION'S LEADING AGING-FOCUSED ORGANIZATIONS HAVE FORMED AN UNPRECEDENTED PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A BETTER PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF OLDER ADULTS' NEEDS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY AND SUBSEQUENTLY TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF ALL PEOPLE AS THEY AGE. THIS COALITION INCLUDES AARP, THE AMERICAN FEDERATION FOR AGING RESEARCH, THE AMERICAN GERIATRICS SOCIETY, THE AMERICAN SOCIETY ON AGING, THE GERONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA, GRANTMAKERS IN AGING, THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGING, AND THE NATIONAL HISPANIC COUNCIL ON AGING. TOGETHER THEY REPRESENT, AND HAVE DIRECT ACCESS TO, MILLIONS OF OLDER ADULTS AND THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN AGING-RELATED PROFESSIONS. WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE INSTITUTE, THE EIGHT ORGANIZATIONS ADDRESS PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS OF OLDER ADULTS: WHO THEY ARE, WHAT ISSUES AFFECT THEM, HOW THEY CONTRIBUTE TO OUR SOCIETY, AND HOW SOCIETY CAN BEST INTEGRATE THEIR NEEDS AND CONTRIBUTIONS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc3ENVIRONMENT - THE INSTITUTE DELIVERS RESEARCH THAT DOCUMENTS THE SHAPING FORCE OF THE ENVIRONMENT ON INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP OUTCOMES (E.G., THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, GENE-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION, AND FOOD AND FITNESS). TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ARE ALSO PROVIDED TO A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY NETWORK OF PROFESSIONALS WHO PROMOTE PUBLIC HEALTH AND PROTECT CITIZENS FROM ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc4OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES:MISCELLANEOUS WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATION - THE INSTITUTE MAINTAINS AN ACTIVE SCHEDULE OF PRESENTATIONS, BRIEFINGS, AND WORKSHOPS, WITH OVER 200 APPEARANCES EACH YEAR. STAFF COVER FRAMING FUNDAMENTALS AS WELL AS FINDINGS FROM SPECIFIC FRAMING INITIATIVES. AND THEY EXPLORE KEY FRAMING CONCEPTS AND RESEARCH RECOMMENDATIONS; PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS TO APPLY RECOMMENDATIONS TO THEIR OWN COMMUNICATIONS PRACTICES; AND EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL OF STRATEGIC FRAME ANALYSIS IN BUILDING ISSUE COALITIONS. PUBLICATION AND CURRICULA - THE INSTITUTE DEVELOPED AND RELEASED A COURSE ABOUT FRAMING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM) EDUCATION. THIS COURSE WAS LAUNCHED VIA THE FRAMEWORKS ACADEMY, AN ONLINE PLATFORM FOR MULTIMEDIA CLASSES IN FRAMING. IT INCLUDES A MIX OF ENGAGING FILM AND ANIMATED LECTURES, INTERACTIVE QUIZZES AND GAMES, AND PRACTICE GUIDANCE ON EFFECTIVELY FRAMING OUTREACH AND POLICY COMMUNICATIONS.
